A good Ningxia carpet, west China mid 19th century, 9ft.9in. x 6ft.5in. 2.97m. x 1.96m. Slight even wear overall, slight staining, some creasing with slight worn kinking. Compare Lorentz, A View of Chinese Rugs, pl. 43, a carpet with a very similar arrangement of motifs, including the Daoist sword and flute emblems and the square vases with hanging lamps on poles behind them, which Lorentz (p. 96), somewhat fancifully perhaps, describes as brush pots with halberds, a pun on wen wu (civil and military).

The maker's have kindly confirmed that gun nos. 5321 / 2 were completed in 1899 and gun no. 5491 was completed in 1900
