ASPREY SET. A gentleman's 1930's Asprey retailed, silver gilt brush set, comprising nine silver gilt mounted pieces. Also included, a mirror, a manicure set & a small jewel box. The whole in crocodile carrying case. Each piece monogrammed HDC for Henry Dougall Coates of Coates Embroidery Silks. Each silver gilt mounted piece with stamped maker's mark, GC & S, London 1935. Size of case 12x31x12cm. CONDITION REPORTS: Overall, the set is in good condition and the crocodile case is in generally good order throughout. There are no dents to the silver, however, there are some very minor nibbles to the base of the stopper of the cologne bottle. There is a little fading on the back of the case and some scuffing on the corners. The wear is commensurate with age. The comb is missing and inside, towards the back of the case, there is a missing element. There is some surface rusting to the shoe horn and also to the back easel support of the hand mirror. There is one key for both locks. There is no outer canvas cover. All of the silver gilt lids are monogrammed HDC for Henry Dougal Coates of Coates Embroidery Silks.
1930-35 correspondence archive to Lord and Lady Carden, Stargroves, Newbury, Berks from their son Henry of the 17th/21st Lancers ( Death or Glory Boys) & Royal Horse Artillery whilst on duty in Egypt. Various barracks at Abbassia, Cairo, Deccan, Trimulcherry, Meerut, 48 letters , most with envelopes, interesting content about army, horses, polo playing etc plus a dozen or so small photos. 1st letter bits ‘ got to Port Said which simply stinks, all beggars and hawkers, train journey to Cairo, temp 100 degrees, alongside the Nile, not very attractive, mooring mast for the R101, she was expected but what a terrible accident that was, the barracks are frightfully nice with 2 acre gardens, we are with the R.H.A and 13th/18th Hussars, the ponies are very well, I have 4 loose boxes and saddle room to myself, my valet is called Esan, he even puts the toothpaste on the brush for me in the morning. Have been down to the club at Grezina, 3 polo grounds, 12 squash courts, golf, race course, tennis court, went shooting by the pyramids etc etc… ‘ Reserve: £100
