We have photographic evidence of the inscription applied on a panel fixed to the frame.The painting is closely similar to the other portrait of Charles of Lorraine (1571 - 1640) executed by Justus Sustermans, today at the Galleria Palatina in Florence. Like the latter, our painting can be surely date from the 1632 to 1637. Before the modern re-lining the canvas bore an ancient brush inscription on the back: "CARLO DI LORENA / DUCA DI GHISA".
