BANKNOTES, 紙鈔, JAPAN, 日本, Japan 日本: Detailed Brush and Pen designs on Rice Paper for a proposed paper currency, probably for Japanese Private Scrips, c. late 19th Century, the vignettes and designs including various imagery such as Chinese dragons, deities, animals and symbolic Chinese figures, several pages with pencil annotations noting banknote denominations and other comments. Generally in good condition with the ink still vibrant and clear, an attractive group, highly unusual and very rare. (19pcs) ex Glendining’s auction, 15 June 1954, lot 257
THREE CHINESE PORCELAIN CYLINDRICAL BRUSH POTS in white, brown and pale green. Each relief decorated with animals and foliage. Square seal marks to bases. 5.5" high, 5.25" high and 4.75" high (14cm, 13.5cm, 12cm). (3) Provenance: London Estate of an eminent Chinese collector. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious damage noted.
GROUP OF THREE CHINESE HARD STONE BRUSH POTS to include plain cylinder grey green jade, 3.75" high (9cm), brown hard stone with carved script decoration, 5" high (12.5cm) and green relief carved hard stone 5.5" high (14cm). (3) Provenance: London Estate of an eminent Chinese collector. CONDITION REPORT: The small jade vase has chips to base and minor rim chips, the brown hard stone vase has a noticeable crack through its body, the green relief carved vase has no obvious damage or losses.
CHINESE CARVED JADE CYLINDRICAL BRUSH POT overall decorated with continuous landscape of mountains, trees, buildings and figures. 7" high (17.5cm). Provenance: London Estate of an eminent Chinese collector. CONDITION REPORT: Minor chips to edges but no serious damage noted. Internal horse shoe crack, does not appear to be visible on the outside.
THREE ITEMS OF CHINESE CARVED ROCK CRYSTAL to include a brush rest in the form of a mountainous outcrop with detailed fish, 12cm, a recumbent Dog of Fo, 4" long (9.5cm) and a jar and cover carved in the form of a fruit with foliage and insect mount to the cover. 4.25" (11cm) (3) Provenance: London Estate of an eminent Chinese collector. CONDITION REPORT: The rocky outcrop has apparent minor chips with more significant loss to one tip on the left, Dog of Fo has only surface wear evident, the fruit bowl and cover has two significant chips to the cover and other edge chips. Detailed condition report on request.
A George III mahogany tray top commode, the rectangular top with a raised gallery and four cut out handles, above a pair of cupboard doors and pull out drawer fitted with a later green leather lined panel, the back panel with a brush slide, raised on four square section supports with chamfered detail and brass casters, 59.5cm wide x 79.5cm high x 47cm deep.
A 19th century mahogany and ebony lined Davenport, the rectangular top with a pierced brass gallery and foliate cast handle above a leather lined writing slope, one side fitted with a stationery drawer, above four short drawers flanked at one side with a brush slide, raised on bracket feet, 37cm wide x 78.5cm high x 53cm deep.
A late 19th century Continental mahogany and gilt metal mounted occasional table, the square marble top with a pierced brass gallery above a small brush slide and blind drawer opened by a push button, raised on four tapered square supports with gilt metal feet, united by a square shaped under tier, 29cm square x 76.5cm high.
