Taxidermy: A Very Rare Late Victorian Cased Pair of Goshawks and a Rough-Legged Buzzard, 1835-1912, by James Birch Waters (from London), Naturalist, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, a fantastic quality diorama case of a pair of full mount adult Goshawks male and female, the male perched upon a lichen encrusted branch with left foot raised, the female below in crouched position, stood upon pebble covered large painted faux rocks, the Rough-Legged Buzzard perched atop a lichen and moss covered faux rock with head turning sharply to the left, all mounted amidst thistles, brush and fauna, set against a water colour painted evening sky back board, enclosed within a large six-glass table display case with ebonised frame, raised upon a moulded and gilt base, 68.5cm by 30.5cm by 96.5cm, taxidermist's small paper trade label to interior lower left. Very little is known about this extremely competent artist and few examples of his work have been recorded, his trade labels within the case usually say 'from London'. It isn't known where J.B. Waters trained but the groundwork within the cases bears a similar resemblance to cases by T.M. Williams and Henry Ward. top glass panel is cracked, 20/03/19

Charles Kirk was born and educated in Edinburgh, he was an established photographer and naturalist, he travelled to London to learn his trade with world renowned taxidermists Rowland Ward Ltd and left to establish his own company back in Scotland around 1894.

Victorian military gentleman's Morocco bound travelling toiletry and requisite case, the hinged cover with a concealed mirror to the underside and opening to reveal a fitted interior, the upper tray with silver and silver topped jars and requisites including shaving brush etc, sponsors mark of Thomas Diller excepting the cover of the long box which bears the sponsors mark of Charles Rawlings & William Summers, London 1841-1849, each piece bearing the engraved crest of the (Capel Cure) family, the lower tray incomplete but containing steel boot hooks etc, width of case 26.5cm Condition: Powder box glass has a fairly severe chip to the corner, remaining steel requisites in the lower tray are rather rusty (this tray is missing some accessories), the lock of the box is locked into place so at some point it has been forced although too much damage has been caused, and there are some scuffs to the Morocco binding - **General condition consistent with age
