A large Chinese carved ivory brush pot 19th century, of cylindrical form, elaborately carved all over in several levels of relief with a continuous scene of a procession of figures through a landscape filled with pavilions, walls, a bridge, boats on a river, rocks and trees, with additional figures and animals engaged in various activities on paths and in buildings, over a pierced floral border, atop a carved wooden base, overall 8.75`` H x 7`` Dia., est: $1000/2000 Provenance: Private Collection, South Pasadena, CA. Condition: The brushpot alone: 6.25`` H x 4.75`` Dia. General marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Lower edge of pot with some yellowish discoloration. A.25`` x.25`` loss restricted to the lower edge border. A vertical crack to molding above the loss. Wooden stand with a narrow.25`` long loss along top rim. A George III Irish silver oval sauce boat by Matthew West, Dublin 1788, with a leaf-capped double scroll handle, embossed overall with foliate sprays, engraved with a crest and on three shell and stepped pad feet, 16.6cm (6 1/2in) long, 153g (4.95 oz); and a George III Irish Old English pattern hook-end sauce ladle, maker’s mark indistinct, possibly ‘I.C’ for John Craig, Dublin 1773, engraved with a crest and a foliate swag and a shell shaped bowl, 19.5cm (7 3/4in) long, 53g (1.7 oz). The first crest of a demi-lion rampant recorded for ATHY, BRUSH, CADAN, DEJEAN, EAMES, FONTE, GRADAN, HARE and 34 other families. The second of an older man’s head is the crest of MULLINS of Burnham, co. Kerry and of MORRIS.

Cattle, a brass sovereign and ½ sovereign rocker, c.1830 with sliding grain adjustment, stamped 'Cattle's Patent' the cast base stamped 'Cattles', with slots to measure thickness, on a cast iron base, 9cm Bennett Cattle (working 1828-c.1836), brass founder, hearth brush tip maker & balance maker for sovereigns, Windsor St, Birmingham. By 1830, B. Cattle had added a small sliding weight in a groove on top of the poise, to determine deficiencies in grains. (Most makers accepted that common rockers would easily detect counterfeits but would not identify the grains lost from a genuine coin. However, the common rockers cost only a tiny amount.)
