Hedwig Marquardt (1884 Biere - 1969 Hannover)Doppelporträt zweier MännerDie Expressionistin Hedwig Marquardt studierte bei Lovis Corinth in Berlin, fand Anschluss an die Avantgarde und stellte 1911 und 1913 in der Juryfreien Kunstschau aus. 1922-1924 arbeitete sie in der Majolika-Manufaktur in Karlsruhe, wo sie die ebenfalls dort tätige Bildhauerin und Keramikerin Augusta "Gust" Kaiser (1895 - 1932) kennenlernte. Gemeinsam wurden die beiden Lebenspartnerinnen 1924/25 die bedeutendsten Entwerferinnen für die neu gegründete Kieler Kunst-Keramik. 1927 ging sie nach Hannover, wo sie neben ihrer existenzsichernden Tätigkeit als Lehrerin weiterhin auch als Malerin aktiv blieb. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884 Rottluff - 1976 Berlin)Stillleben mit Flaschen und braunem KrugStil- und motivtypisches, 1966 entstandenes Blatt aus dem reifen Oeuvre des Expressionisten. Schmidt-Rottluff, der mit Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Max Pechstein 1905-1913 Mitglied der Künstlergruppe "Brücke" war, hatte schon in dieser Zeit erste Stillleben geschaffen. In den 1960er Jahren wurden Gegenstände und Blumen zu dominierenden Bildmotiven des Künstlers. Zugleich gewannen die unmittelbar umgesetzten Papierarbeiten immer mehr an Bedeutung, nicht zuletzt nachdem Schmidt-Rottluff 1963 die Ölmalerei gänzlich aufgab. Auch stilistisch und technisch ist ein deutlicher Wandel festzustellen. Statt der weich-fließenden Linien in den 1950er Jahren bevorzugte er nun dynamisch-rhythmische, expressiv umbrechende und staccatoartig verkürzte Linien; durch verwobene Formen und Flächen brach Schmidt-Rottluff die Motive mosaikartig auf und erzielte einen höheren Abstraktionsgrad. A LACQUER SUZURIBAKO DEPICTING SHISHI AND HOTEIJapan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of rounded rectangular form, bearing a roiro ground, the cover finely decorated in gold and colored takamaki-e with e-nashiji to depict two ferocious shishi standing foursquare in dynamic poses, well detailed with scrolling bushy manes and tails, muscular bodies, sharp claws and fangs, and large bulging eyes with black pupils ringed in red. The interior is decorated in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e to depict Hotei standing beside his large treasure sack detailed with paulownia sprays and phoenixes in gold takakami-e, supporting himself on a cane and holding a fan in his left hand, wearing a loose-fitting robe, his face with a cheerful expression framed by large earlobes. The baseboard fitted with plain brush holders and a suzuri (inkstone). A COMPLETE DECK OF HANAFUDA NINTENDO CARDS, TAISHOJapan, Taisho period (1912-1926) Comprising 48 hand-printed cards. The technique, called kappa-zuri, uses a round brush through stenciling. Condition: Good age-related condition with expected traces of wear and use. Minor material loss along the margins. Only one card with a crease. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands, acquired from the above. J.W.N. van Achterbergh was an important collector, expert, and patron of Dutch post-war ceramics. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world's leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Dimensions: 5.5 x 3.5 cm each In the late 19th century, Nintendo began as a playing card manufacturer, a tradition it still continues today, showcasing Japan's beauty through its decks. Hanafuda is a floral-covered card game representing different seasons with suites like plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, peonies, chrysanthemums, and maple leaves. Nature holds great significance in Japanese art, textiles, and tattooing. Hand-stenciled Nintendo cards like this one are rare, dating between 1900 and 1930. The cards were printed using the kappa-zuri technique, combining hand-stenciling and woodblock or copper plate printing. Hanafuda was once associated with illicit gambling but is now played during the Japanese New Year.
A FINE GROUP OF NINE WOOD AND BAMBOO SAGEMONO SETS, EDO - MEIJIJapan, Edo period (1615-1868) - Meiji period (1868-1912)Comprising seven bamboo and wood tonkotsu (tobacco containers), and two yatate: one consisting of a bamboo stalk fudezutsu (brush holder), with a glazed ceramic sumitsubo (inkwell) shaped as a mokugyo; the other a red fudezutsu with calligraphy, a fine mixed metal openwork ojime, and a bamboo inkwell incised with a pine tree. The first tonkotsu is carved with calligraphy, a frog, and a landscape on the cover, with a matching kiseruzutsu (pipecase) of senryu-zutsu type carved as a lotus leaf. The second tonkotsu engraved with calligraphy, with an openwork ojime, and a kiseruzutsu of senryu-zutsu type carved as Ashinaga. The third carved with a face to each side and with a metal kanamono to the top of the cover, with a floral ojime and a kiseruzutsu of senryu-zutsu type shaped as a gourd. The fourth hexagonal and with incised calligraphy, a plain ojime, and a kiseruzutsu of senryu-zutsu type. The fifth a tonkotsu and kiseruzutsu of senryu-zutsu type, both naturalistically carved from burlwood, showing protruding burls and recesses, finely polished to a smooth feel overall. The sixth carved as a monkey covering its ears, with a floral ojime and a kiseruzutsu of senryu-zutsu type depicting a dragon. The seventh and last kiseruzutsu of muso-zutsu type, with a stag antler ojime depicting Hotei, a leather pouch (tabako-ire), and a pipe (kiseru). Condition: Very good condition with some wear and small nicks here and there. TOSAI: A RARE STAG ANTLER YATATE DECORATED WITH MONSBy Tosai, signed Tosai 匋斎 saku 作 with two sealsJapan, Tokyo, Asakusa, late 19th centuryThe yatate comprising a fudezutsu (brush holder) and silver-fitted sumitsubo (inkwell) with hinged cover, the underside of the inkwell decorated with a finely carved chrysanthemum, the sides of the inkwell and one end of the handle decorated with various mon designs including Maru ni chigai takanoha (double hawk feather), hanabishi (diamond flower), manji (svastika), serrated leaves, and a pouch, all against a densely hatched ground, all executed in the manner of Ozaki Kokusai (1835.1892). The smoothly polished section of the handle incised with the signature TOSAI saku as well as two seals, Zuiun Ho ('The Laws of Auspicious Clouds') and Sakko ('To create the old and antiquity'). The stag antler of a fine caramel tone.LENGTH 14.8 cmCondition: Good condition, minor wear, natural imperfections including minor age cracks.With a small bead and a miniature silk pouch.This apparently unrecorded artist appears to be a rare follower of Ozaki Kokusai (1835-1892), the founder of the famous 'Asakusa school' in Tokyo.
A SILVER INLAID SHIBUICHI 'POMEGRANATE AND BIRDS' YATATE, MEIJIJapan, 19th century, Meiji Period (1868-1912). The yatate comprising a fudezutsu (brush holder), brush, sumitsubo (inkwell) and a small knife, the sumitsubo incised and inlaid in silver to the hinged lid with two birds perched on a branch growing pomegranates.Condition: Very good condition, minor wear, and casting flaws. Provenance: The Strong National Museum of Play, accession number 78.1503 (lacquered to the base of the inkwell). Margaret Woodbury Strong (1897-1969) grew up in a prosperous family of collectors. Her interests ranged so widely that by 1960 she had amassed more than 27,000 collectible items and works of art. The vast majority of her collections related in some way to play and as her accumulation grew, Margaret planned a museum to house her collection. It eventually opened to the public in 1982, and grew dramatically over the following decades, expanding its collections, facilities, and resources, now spanning over 285,000 square feet. Composed of a chalcographic print representing the Evangelist Luke who, depicted with a brush and easel, is painting a true image of the Virgin and Child, who appear to him in a cloud radiating Divine Light; a winged ox above; inscription 'S. Lucas Evang.' (St Luke the Evangelist) below; the central image enclosed within a lace frame, decorated with embroidery, containing relics of Saints Magnus, Diodorus and Prosperus; all enclosed in a gilded wooden frame.
