Andy Warhol is synonymous with Pop Art, consumerism and the cult of celebrity. Through the medium of silkscreen printing he reinforced the idea of manufactured beauty which he saw in everything from Campbell`s Soup cans to Coca Cola, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. In the 1980s Warhol returned to advertising as a source of inspiration. His earlier output of the 1960s pivoted on the promises of ad men from cheap magazines and resulted in works such as Before and After, 1961 which was the genesis of his obsession with image, physical beauty and later the cult of celebrity. The subject of the present work, Be a Somebody with a Body, uses the muscular image of a bodybuilder (sourced from an untraced ad) projected against a canvas. Warhol emphasises the message through the use of bold graphic text; a BODY makes you a SOMEBODY. The figure`s defined torso and confident pose is highlighted by a halo that radiates from his head; a detail that nods to another late series by the artist based on Leonardo da Vinci`s mural The Last Supper. In that series he isolated the figure of Jesus from his disciplines and transplanted him next to an image of a bodybuilder; the gospel according to Warhol.

WARHOL ANDY: (1928-1987) American Pop Artist. Signed and inscribed printed 8vo invitation card to a reception in honour of Warhol at the Bischofberger Gallery at the Palace Hotel, St. Moritz, 14th February 1976, on the occasion of the opening of his exhibition entitled Ladies and Gentlemen, the front cover featuring a colour image of one of the works from his Ladies and Gentlemen series (1975) which depicted various drag queens, transvestites and prostitutes. Signed by Warhol to the front cover, his first name to the lower white border beneath the image and his surname running across the base of the image with slightly weaker contrast. VG

A Fine American Classical Carved Mahogany Desk, early 19th c., attributed to Joseph Barry, Philadelphia, fall front writing drawer flanked by foliate and rosette panels, gothic arch paneled doors below, interior fitted with two over three drawers, flanked by reeded columns with foliate capitals and hairy paw feet, plinth base, turned feet, brass caps, height 48 in., width 47 1/2 in., depth 24 in. Note: The distinctive paterae, carved columns, finely matched door veneer, blocked plinth and turned legs on this desk are nearly identical to those on the well-known Rebecca Gratz (1783-1869) sideboard attributed to Joseph Barry (Philadelphia, wc. 1810-1822). The Gratz sideboard descended in the family until 1973 when it was purchased by Andy Warhol and, later, acquired from his estate by Winterthur in 1988.
