signed in pencil in the margin, 24/88 in pencil in the plate; thumbprint and dated 2017 on the reverse silkscreen on hand torn archival paper 122 by 92cm Brazen, unapologetic and positioned at the forefront of street art culture, Mr. Brainwashis one of the fearless renegades of contemporary art. The French-born, Los Angeles-based artist is lesser known by his given name of Thierry Guetta, yet his moniker has become synonymous with the explosive collision between pop art and graffiti culture.Treading the boundary between high art and guerrilla satire, Guetta walks arm-in-armwith another one of the urban contemporary scene’s ubiquitous enigmas, Banksy. It was fellow street artist’s Banksy’s Academy Award-nominated 2010 documentary,Exit Through the Gift Shop, that helped to propel Guetta’s unconventionally swift riseto commercial stardom(1).Following the release of the acclaimed documentary, critics began to speculate asto whether Guetta was an authentic creator or an elaborate hoax conjured by theanonymous Banksy. After noting the undeniable likeness between the two artists’styles, some suggested that Mr. Brainwash’s works had actually been created byBanksy himself, while his unruly protégé was an intricate comment on the nature offame within the art world(2). Banksy took to his website to vehemently deny the claims. The widespread controversy only further amplified the notoriety of Mr. Brainwash. The artist’s works toy with pop culture iconography, subverting society’s mostrecognizable images through the sharp-witted use of reconceptualised appropriation.Guetta has captured the imagination of the international market, captivating thediscerning eye of collectors with his large-scale works currently fetching hundreds ofthousands of dollars(3).Deeply inspired by the work of Pop Art prince, Andy Warhol, Guetta has oftenfeatured Hollywood celebrities and cultural icons as the subjects of his vivid portraits. The artist has created images paying tribute to Kate Moss, Jimmy Hendrix, CharlieChaplin, Albert Einstein, and here, Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.Aptly entitled King, the limited edition monochromatic screenprint features the faceof the civil rights movement’s most influential figure. The portrait, with King’s piercinggaze and the austere use of black ink, is exceptional amid the artist’s more typicaltechnicolour works. As a characteristic tongue-in-cheek nod to the controversysurrounding the authenticity of his work, the screenprint boasts Guetta’s ownthumbprint on the reverse. - E.S.K.1. Lowell Nesbitt (New York, Maryland, 1933-1993) Important "Seven Electric Flowers" Oil on Canvas painting. Measures 84 x 160 inches. This painting was featured in the April 1977 Archetectual Digest article which was a feature on Lowell Nesbitt's New York City Studio. The painting was hung in the four story atrium near the pool (See Photo). Formerly the site of a police stable that he purchased and Edward F. Knowles redesigned, the area measured in excess of 12,500 square feet. This studio and living space included an indoor swimming pool, a four-story atrium and a rooftop entertainment area; Nesbitt labelled the facility "The Old Stable." This provided a fitting backdrop to the artist's larger-than-life artworks. Nesbitt's studio became a popular gathering place for major art world figures, celebrities and dignitaries including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Larry Rivers and James Rosenquist. This monumental space was also featured in articles in the New York Times and the Washington Post in the late 1970s.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987)Tomato-Beef Noodle O´s, from Campbell's Soup II, 1969 (F. & S. II.61)screenprint in colours on smooth wove paper - number 155 from an edition of 250 (total edition includes 26 artist's proofs).Printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co., Inc., New York. Published by Factory Editions, New York.hand signed in ball-point pen and stamp-numbered 155/250 verso88.90 x 58.40cm (35 x 23in)Provenance: Private Collection Literature: Feldman-Schellmann II.61One evening in 1962, the philosopher and art critic Arthur Danto happened to see a work by Andy Warhol in the window of the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. The work was a stack of screen-printed Brillo Boxes, just like the boxes you could find in the supermarket, but these were recreated by Warhol and they were empty. Danto realised in that moment that Warhol had transformed the whole notion of fine art. As far as he was concerned, things would never be the same again.Born in Philadelphia in 1930, Warhol had worked as a very successful commercial artist and illustrator in New York since the early 1950s. But now he was transforming the subjects and methods of popular and commercial culture into the currency of fine art. Pretty much every American, Danto realised, could understand a Warhol. You didn't need knowledge of art history or any kind of insider information. At a stroke he had bypassed the pretensions of an art world elite - an elite that included Danto himself.Warhol went on to draw on any number of everyday subjects including, famously, Campbell's Soup cans, dollar bills, advertising imagery and film stars. When Warhol used images of film stars, he didn't aim for a classical studio portrait, he took ordinary publicity shots, as reproduced in newspapers and magazines, familiar to millions of people, made silkscreen versions of them, mechanically, but with some interventions, and produced them in multiples. His studio was called, appropriately, the Factory. His Ingrid Bergman has her in character as Sister Superior Mary Benedict in The Bells of St Mary's. Aidan Dunne, September 2019

Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). "Texan [Robert Rauschenberg]". Original color letterpress print. Printed 1970. Signed in white marker, center right. Edition of c200. Medium weight light cream uncoated wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. Overall size: 9 1/2 x 9 7/8 in. (241 x 251 mm). This rare letterpress print was published as part of the Warhol portfolio of eight prints which was included in the publication/portfolio "Artists & Photographs" published by Multiples, Inc., New York City, in association with Colorcraft Inc., NYC in 1970. The publication consists of a cardboard box containing artist's publications, multiples, artist's books, etc. by Warhol, Rauschenberg, Ruscha, Nauman, Gormley, Christo, Lewitt, and others. The stated edition size was 1,200 but as Peter Gidal indicates "…rumors abound that the art-box never got made in more than 800 copies, but even the origination gallery can no longer verify it. What is certain is that no "extra" copies of any of the multiples were made, and that the Gormley was in an edition of 200 and the Rauschenberg in an edition of 400. This substantiated the fact that complete boxes could never have been more than 200." Warhol's contributions were printed in different sizes, scales, and mediums. Our example is stamped verso "File Copy - Colorcraft Inc. - Please Return" indicating that it came from the Colorcraft archives. No auction records located.
