Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). Screenprint on paper from the "Sunset" series, 1972. The present work, depicted with a gold sun on a blue and green background, is one of 632 unique prints created for the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pencil signed and numbered 106/470 along the verso; stamped "Hotel Marquette Prints" along the verso.Provenance: Printed for the Hotel Marquette, Minneapolis, MN; Lesch Gallery, Minneapolis; Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became a leading figure in the art movement known as Pop Art. As a child, Warhol was frequently kept home from school due to a chronic illness. During this time, Warhol immersed himself drawing and became captivated by the visual culture of the time, surrounded by snapshots of culture and celebrity in comic books, magazines, and commonplace items, laying the foundation for a later fascination with the intersection of artistic expression and commercial success.Warhol pursued formal art education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and found initial success as a commercial illustrator in New York City during the 1950s. However, it was in the 1960s that Warhol catapulted to fame with the emergence of Pop Art. His Campbell's Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe portraits, and Coca-Cola bottle paintings became iconic symbols of the movement. Warhol's unique approach drew inspiration from commercialism, mass media, and consumer culture, making him a distinctive voice in the 20th-century art scene alongside contemporaries like Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. His innovative studios, particularly "The Factory," served as avant-garde hubs of creativity, attracting diverse talents. Here, Warhol embraced screen printing, a technique that allowed for mass production of art. This method became a hallmark of his work, enabling him to blur the boundaries between art and consumer culture. In 1972, Warhol designed the Sunset series, 632 screenprints of a sunset, for the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With their vivid colors and bold composition, the Sunset prints demonstrated Warhol's ability to elevate mundane subjects into captivating, mass-produced art, embodying his fascination with the intersection of art and commerce. In this particular print, the golden orb, haloed in a soft white, overlaid on a gradient of gray-blue and beige evokes a universality of place and beauty--an aesthetic experience and natural phenomena--that implores the viewer to consider the elemental nature of the scene, while also considering its present form: one among a series 632 similar prints. The Sunset series thus encapsulates Warhol's ability to merge high art with commercial culture while prompting reflection on the deeper implications of our consumer-driven world. In the decades since his passing in 1987, Andy Warhol’s legacy endures and his impact is evident in contemporary art, where artists continue to draw inspiration from his fusion of art, media, and consumerism. Warhol’s ability to capture the zeitgeist of his era and challenge artistic conventions ensures that his influence remains a lasting force, shaping the trajectory of art and culture well into the 21st century.Sight; height: 32 3/4 in x width: 32 3/4 in. After Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). Manufactured by the Campbell Soup Company, United States. Screenprinted cellulose and cotton paper dress titled "The Souper Dress" with Warhol's iconic Campbell's soup can, ca. 1969. The dress is labeled along a tag on the inner lining "The Souper Dress/ no cleaning - no washing - It's Carefree/ Fire Resistant Unless Washed or Cleaned."Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:The trend of disposable paper dresses emerged in the 1960s. They often served as vehicles for advertisements and promotions and were made of materials such as Kaycel and Dura-Weave. While they initially operated on the fringes of fashion, the novelty was quickly adopted by high-fashion designers. Some paper dresses were even designed for themed balls, events, and boutiques. The "Souper Dress" paper dresses were designed as an advertising campaign as well as art. One advertisement for the dresses encouraged consumers to purchase two cans of Campbell's soup, remove the paper labels, and mail them in along with $1.00 to receive one of these iconic dresses. While not directly designed by Pop artist Andy Warhol, the Campbell's Soup Company tapped into the public knowledge of the artist's soup can works to promote their own product.Height: 44 in x width: 29 in.

Lowell Nesbitt (American, 1933-1993). Large oil on canvas painting titled "Two Irises on Black" depicting two blooming pink-red irises against a pure black background. Signed and titled along the verso.Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:born in Maryland, Lowell Nesbitt studied art throughout his scholarly career, eventually earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Temple University in Pennsylvania. Additionally, he studied stained glass and printmaking during a fellowship with the Royal College of Art in London. After serving in the United States Army for two years, he worked as a night watchman at The Phillips Collection before relocating to New York City to pursue his career as an artist. While he hosted his first exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1958, it would not be until his 1964 debut at the Corcoran Gallery of Art that he would receive widespread recognition for his works. The botanical works displayed, much like the painting offered here, were influenced by Robert Indiana. Upon viewing some of Nesbitt's works in the preceding years, he suggested that Nesbitt should move from abstraction to realism, which would come to be the artist's forte. The photorealistic paintings - a term that Nesbitt fought against - would define his career. He established that his works covered a wide diversity of techniques and styles. He painted flowers, studio interiors, articles of clothing, x-ray figures, fruits and vegetables, caverns and ruins, and a plethora of other subjects. In addition to his painting career, he fostered relationships with some of the greatest artistic names of the 20th century including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, and Robert Mapplethorpe. His relationship with the latter caused some controversy when the Corcoran Gallery canceled an exhibition for being too explicit. Nesbitt publically revoked a $1.5 million bequest and gifted it instead to the Phillips Collection when the Corcoran Gallery refused to reinstall Mapplethorpe's works in a show of support.Unframed; height: 57 in x width: 39 1/2 in.
