Andy Warhol (1928-1987) Golden Mushroom, from Campbell's Soup II, 1969 (F. & S. II.62)screenprint in colours on smooth wove paper, framed - number 94 from an edition of 250 (total edition includes 26 artist's proofs). Printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co., Inc., New York. Published by Factory Editions, New York.hand signed in ball-point pen verso, stamp-numbered 94/250 verso 89 x 58½cm (35 x 23in)Taylor Gallery, Belfast; Private Collection Feldman-Schellmann II.62 One evening in 1962, the philosopher and art critic Arthur Danto happened to see a work by Andy Warhol in the window of the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. The work was a stack of screen-printed Brillo Boxes, just like the boxes you could find in the supermarket, but these were recreated by Warhol and they were empty. Danto realised in that moment that Warhol had transformed the whole notion of fine art. As far as he was concerned, things would never be the same again. Born in Philadelphia in 1930, Warhol had worked as a very successful commercial artist and illustrator in New York since the early 1950s. But now he was transforming the subjects and methods of popular and commercial culture into the currency of fine art. Pretty much every American, Danto realised, could understand a Warhol. You didn't need knowledge of art history or any kind of insider information. At a stroke he had bypassed the pretensions of an art world elite - an elite that included Danto himself. Warhol went on to draw on any number of everyday subjects including, famously, Campbell's Soup cans - of which there are three pristine examples here - dollar bills, advertising imagery and film stars. When Warhol used images of film stars, he didn't aim for a classical studio portrait, he took ordinary publicity shots, as reproduced in newspapers and magazines, familiar to millions of people, made silkscreen versions of them, mechanically, but with some interventions, and produced them in multiples. His studio was called, appropriately, the Factory. His Ingrid Bergman has her in character as Sister Superior Mary Benedict in The Bells of St Mary's. Aidan Dunne, October 2018

Lot 130

Andy Warhol (1928-1987)Two plates, from A Gold Book (See Feldman & Schellmann IV.106-124)Two offset lithographs printed in black, 1957, each on gold paper, each the full sheet, each 362 x 286mm (14 1/4 x 11 1/4in) (mounted) (2)The Gold Book (1957), in which these two plates were included, is recognised as one of the most elaborate editions by Warhol, with thirteen of the plates printed on gold paper-inspired by, according to close friend Charles Lisanby, the gold-leaf furniture lacquered with black designs that the two had seen on their trip to Bangkok. The images in the twenty-two page volume were devoted to "Boys/filles/fruits/and flowers/Shoes/Ted Carey and Edward Wallowitch" in the words of the artist. Certainly, Warhol did base the designs on photographs by Wallowitch, to whom he was romantically linked at the time. He went on to exhibit the completed plates at the Bodley Gallery in New York shortly after publication, along with his related drawings and source material for the book. The first plate in this lot, of the young man leaning, is a clear reference to James Dean, the heartthrob who had died just two years earlier in 1955. Meanwhile, the second fits in with larger themes across the book of childhood and nature. Thus the Gold Book marks the beginning of Warhol's explorations into the ideas that would preoccupy him throughout his career, including the allure of celebrity and Hollywood, childhood ideals, nature versus nurture, commercialism, sexuality and of course what people will do to chase the American dream.

Grayson Perry CBE RA (b.1960). Joker. Digital signed print, numbered 1/1. On Giclée Hahnemühle Pearl paper. 59.4 x 41cm. Framed. Grayson Perry is an English contemporary artist. He is known for his ceramic vases, tapestries and cross-dressing, as well as his observations of the contemporary arts scene, and for dissecting British prejudices, fashions and foibles. Perry's vases have classical forms and are decorated in bright colours, depicting subjects at odds with their attractive appearance. There is a strong autobiographical element in his work, in which images of Perry as Claire, his female alter-ego, and Alan Measles, his childhood teddy bear, often appear. Perry has had solo exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, at the Barbican Centre, the British Museum and Serpentine Gallery in London, at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan. His work is held in the permanent collections of the British Council and Arts Council, Crafts Council, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Tate and Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 2003. In 2008 he was ranked number 32 in The Daily Telegraph's list of the 100 most powerful people in British culture. In 2012, Perry was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork-the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover-to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life. MICHEL FRERE (BELGIAN 1961-1999) Untitled , 1996 oil on canvas 106 x 177 cm (41 3/4 x 69 3/4 in.) initialed and dated on verso PROVENANCE Collection of Richard Milazzo (label on stretcher) Sidney Janis Gallery, New York (label on stretcher)LOT NOTESMichel Frere was a Belgian abstract expressionist artist related to Informalist European postwar movements and groups, such as CoBrA, tachisme, and materialisme. Frere, with his rambunctious, large-scale canvases, viewed his work as a development of the ideas of artists such as Gustave Courbet (whom he loved for his landscapes), James Ensor and Eugène Leroy. Like other “materialist” artists - a term coined by art critic Michel Tapies to describe a certain kind of outsider art, or art brut, as it is known in Europe - including Jean Debuffet, Antoni Tapies and Lucio Fontana, Frere paid a great amount of attention to the surface qualities and presence of his works, often with the inclusion of unconventional painting materials. This piece, created in 1996, embodies both the artist’s love of landscape and his insistence upon a kind of literal substantiality. The pastose, weighty convergence of aubergine-browns, light greens, ochres, and a touch of cerulean, pays homage to the painterly outdoor scenes of the Barbizon school, and produces some of his most recognizable work. The following painting comes from the collection of art critic, publisher, poet and curator Richard Milazzo, author of a catalogue on Michel Frere and curator of several shows Sidney Janis Gallery, one of the most prominent platforms for avant-garde art in postwar New York. The Gallery, opened in 1948 and founded by eponymous art collector and entrepreneur Sidney Janis along with wife Harriet Janis, represented the likes of Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rosenquist and Oldenburg, and held exhibitions of Fauvist, Dada, Surrealist and De Stijl artists: Matisse, Mondrian, Giacometti, Arp, Leger. The Sidney Janis Gallery is perhaps best known for furthering the now-illustrious Abstract Expressionists, such as de Kooning and Pollock, and subsequently, the Pop Artists (the aforementioned Lichtenstein and Warhol) in its influential 1962 exhibition titled The New Realists."}" data-sheets-userformat="{"2":513,"3":{"1":0},"12":0}">LOT NOTES Michel Frere was a Belgian abstract expressionist artist related to Informalist European postwar movements and groups, such as CoBrA, tachisme, and materialisme. Walasse Ting (1929-2010) 丁雄泉. Abstract acrylic on canvas titled All My Life is a Spring. Painting is signed, titled, and dated '71 along the verso. Labels from the Lefevre Gallery and the Minneapolis Institute of Art are attached to the verso.Provenance: Lefevre Gallery, New York, New York.                       Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, Minnesota.                       Dayton family collection, Minneapolis, Minnesota.                       Acquired by the present owner from above.Biography:Today in 1967 A.D. In our time life more comfortable and complicated People more busy and nervous More money and more war Everybody want more and more expensive living If you talk about nature, she running into flower shop or go to country for weekend If anybody melancholy please take an aspirin A poem is nothing Not bigger than a banana not worth three cents Sometimes after big dinner I wish you Take a look little star See yourself without a mirror-Walasse Ting, preface to Chinese Moonlight.Walasse Ting was a painter and a poet, a powerhouse in the mid-20th century art and intellectual scene. His work was fluorescent and shocking, intended to confront the viewer and force them to pause their worldly cares to focus on beauty. Born Ding Xiongquan in Wuxi, Jiangsu province in 1929, Ting had little formal artistic education. After a brief stint at the Shanghai Art Academy, he left for Paris, arriving in 1949. He quickly fell in with the CoBrA group, an avant-garde collective of artists known for their spontaneous way of painting and rebellion against the artistic establishment. Their emphasis on Outsider Art had a profound effect on Ting, especially since he had little art training and tended to see himself as an outsider in the art world. In 1959, he left Paris for New York City, where he was influenced by Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism. He became friends with many artists working in these styles, including greats such as Andy Warhol, with whom he once put on a joint exhibition. His work was influenced by these connections, pulling ideas from both movements and fluctuating between abstraction and figural works with a unique ease. He also began finding inspiration in more traditional sources, using bold strokes inspired by the calligraphy of his native China. In addition to art, he began publishing poetry during this period, both original poems and translations of classical Chinese poems. He published thirteen books, many of which contained illustrations by himself and his artistic contemporaries. In 1970, he won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for Drawing. His career continued to flourish, and he split his time between New York and Amsterdam, painting, writing, and displaying his works. He additionally made many trips to Paris to exhibit at the Salon de Mai and traveled to Tahiti to explore the tropical landscapes and colors. During his long and varied career, he had over 60 solo exhibitions of his paintings, as well as making forays into theater direction and teaching. In all his endeavors, he tried to use art to bring beauty into the lives of as many people as possible, because, in his words, “[w]ithout beauty, life makes no sense.”This painting is a fine example of Ting’s abstract works. The vigorous sprays of intense color across the subdued green background create contrast and movement, blending the abstract style popular with his artistic contemporaries, such as Jackson Pollock, with traditional Chinese notions of the beauty in blank space. This work is considered by many to be his most original, and perhaps the high-water mark of his career.Dimensions: Unframed; height: 44 ½ in x width: 58 5/8 in.
