Andy Warhol, American 1928-1987- "The Shadow", (F&S II.267) from Myths Portfolio, 1981; screenprint in colours with diamond dust on Lenox Museum Board, signed and numbered 55/200 in pencil, 96.5x96.5cm Note: The Shadow by Andy Warhol is a self-portrait belonging to the Myth series of ten screenprints from 1981, that exemplify Warhol's sense for the powerful motifs of his time. They portray the universal view of America's once captivating and commanding past taken from 1950's television and old Hollywood films such as Superman, Uncle Sam, The Wicked Witch, Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus. The Shadow was a fictional radio crime fighter from Warhol's childhood during the 1930's. Andy Warhol, American 1928-1987- "Brillo Box"; mixed media marker on cardboard, signed in black marker pen, in a perspex case, 21x19x8cm (including case) Note: Andy Warhol's iconic 'Brillo Boxes', his first sculptural works, exhibited in 1964 at Stable Gallery in New York, raised questions about our accepted ideas about and definitions of "high art" using deadpan humor and pop culture imagery. He appropriated a consumer-minded product (literally, the actual cardboard boxes with Brillo pads still inside) and elevated them into the realm of fine art sculpture. Warhol's 'Brillo Boxes' took the mundane and transformed it into something thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to reassess the aesthetics found in commercialism, as well as re-evaluate their own ideas about the definition of art.
