Striking catalogue published for a group show by Allan D'Arcangelo, Yoyoi Kusama, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Rivers and Tom Wesselmann. Profusely illustrated with documentation of work by the above artists, and two bright colour reproductions of Warhol's Flowers. Booklet and interior in very good condition. Warhol (1928-1987) transformed a live pig into a piggy bank decorated with flowers, printed in brilliant colours and detail. Light scuffing along edges, with a 2 cm tear on center right margin. Generally in bright and fine condition.

Popkultur, Techno, die Großstadt, Computerspiele und Werbung sind seine Inspirationsquellen. Aber auch in der Kunstgeschichte und der Kunstszene seiner Zeit findet Majerus Reibungspunkte. Mit Hilfe des Computers verfremdet er Ausschnitte aus Werbegrafiken oder bereits existenten Kunstwerken zu Kompositionen, in denen die Versatzstücke unhierarchisch nebeneinanderstehen, zu gigantischen Blow-ups vergrößert. Leiten ließ er sich von seinem wachen Sinn für die Beziehung zwischen Form und Farbe (Nicolas Bourriaud, in: Michel Majerus, Ausst.Kat. Kunstmuseum Stuttgart/CAPC Bordeaux 2012, S.114).„Gebilde 2“ ist das zweite Gemälde einer fünfteiligen Serie, in der der damals 29-jährige Michel Majerus 1996 ein Thema innerhalb seines frühen Werks variiert. Im gleichen Jahr erlebt er mit seiner ersten Retrospektive in der Kunsthalle Basel, kuratiert von Peter Pakesch, den internationalen Durchbruch. Eines der meistbeachteten Bilder ist das 15-teilige, insgesamt 480 x 700 cm messende spektakuläre Riesenformat „Zwei große Gebilde“. (siehe Abbildung). Jede einzelne Tafel entspricht in den Maßen 160 x 140 cm dem Werk „Gebilde 2“. Im Kontext der Serie setzt er sich unter anderem mit Andy Warhol und Frank Stella auseinander. Stellas analytische Farbfeldmalerei ebenso wie Andy Warhols Pop Art-Farbigkeit und eine gewisse spielerische Serialität der Formen und Elemente prägen auch „Gebilde 2“.

Over the 1950s and ’60s he rose to become the king of the New York avant-garde, and one of the most important and iconic artists of the 20th century. Works such as Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and his screen prints of Marilyn Monroe have come to define our notions of 20th century art. Warhol created art out of the imagery and iconography of consumerism and celebrity culture, and applied the same commercial processes of mass production to make it. It was an idea that venerated the banality of popular culture. Warhol sought to demolish rarefaction in art and redefine the artist from Romantic visionary to an organising principle in a commercial system of mass production. Having had his first solo shows of paintings in the early 1950s, Warhol began focusing on screen printing in the 1960s. He opened his studio, The Factory, in 1963. The Factory became the centre for an entourage of transvestites, drug addicts, artists, models and musicians such as The Velvet Underground. The latter’s debut album cover featured Warhol’s now-iconic ‘peel slowly and see’ Banana. By 1965 Warhol was making seminal films such as Blow Job (1964) and Sleep (1963). The Factory would remain an important centre of New York Bohemianism, but Warhol began distancing himself from its more unconventional fringes following an attempt on his life by the radical feminist and Factory acolyte, Valerie Solanas, in 1968. In the 70s and 80s, Warhol returned to painting with works such as his ‘Oxidation Paintings’ series. He mentored and collaborated with a new generation of younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente. He was just 58 when he died unexpectedly following a routine gall bladder operation in 1987. Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn made auction history at Christie’s New York in 2022. It sold for $195 million, making it the most expensive 20th-century work of art to sell at auction. Badri Valian (American, b. 1977)  Nude - Andy Warhol - 2014  Charcoal and chalk on paper  Signed by artist with Certificate of Authenticity  60 x 46cm (24" x 18") Badri Valian (American, b 1977) is a participatory interactive installation artist and painter based in San Francisco. Her work explores personal and social issues, with a particular focus on poverty, systemic racism, sexual harassment, dictatorships, and forced displacements. Having experienced prevalent censorship, gender discrimination, and inequality in her home country of Iran, Valian has redefined her artistic voice to amplify the voices of underserved minorities. Valian's art installations are centered around public engagement and aim to foster new social connections. She believes in integrating different communities to create transformative experiences. With a background in Fine Arts from Iran, she has been recognized with multiple national awards for her innovative techniques and socially-oriented art projects. Recently, Valian showcased her interactive art projects at various notable venues, including the Santa Fe Art Institute Artist In Residence Program in New Mexico, the University of California Berkeley, the Clarion Alley Mural Project in San Francisco, The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco and YBCA, Yerba Buena Center of the Arts. Valian is currently pursuing a dual degree of MFA and VCS at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
