* Christopher Wood (British, 1901-1930), Seated Nude, red chalk and charcoal on buff paper, in a painted frame, 40 x 30cm (16 x 12in). Provenance: Bought in Norfolk some forty years ago by a Cambridge academic, and authenticated then by Sir Leslie Martin of Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire. In 1921 Christopher Wood travelled to Paris and studied at the Academy Julian where he met Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Diaghilev, the ballet designer. Wood actually designed sets for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes but they were never used. Later Wood met Ben and Winifred Nicholson and travelled to St Ives where he met and was influenced by the ‘primitive’ artist, Alfred Wallis. Wood had several major exhibitions during his short life and several posthumous shows at the Wertheim Gallery (1931), and Lefevre Galleries (1932)

Jacques VILLON « PAYSAGE AUX GRANDS ARBRES », 1945 Huile sur toile signée en bas à gauche, contresignée et datée au dos 55 x 65 cm 30 000/40000€ Provenance : - Galerie Louis Carré, Paris - Collection particulière, Paris Exposition : Vingt-cinquième Biennale Internationale de Venise, Venise, 1950 Jacques Villon avec le groupe de la « Section d’or » rechercha tout au long de sa vie et dès les années 1910 dans le « Traité » de Léonard de Vinci une formulation mathématique qui établisse les proportions de la peinture. Il emprunte à Léonard le réseau de pyramides qui déterminent l’organisation de la toile pour former un art consistant à peindre un rapport parfait entre les parties et le tout et permettant de donner un ordre de grandeur en situant les objets à l’intérieur de l’espace pyramidal unitaire. Pour Villon, le tableau est un acte de pensée qui s’adresse autant aux sens qu’à l’esprit. Animateur, théoricien du groupe de Puteaux, inventeur du terme de la « Section d’or », ce courant qui prend ses distances avec le cubisme d’un Braque ou d’un Picasso, Villon entend jeter les bases d’un accord parfait entre l’art et l’esprit afin de créer les conditions d’une harmonie chaude, colorée et lumineuse entre les différentes parties et composantes du tableau. « Paysage aux grands arbres » juxtapose afin de lier les sens et l’esprit, les couleurs avec la charpente du ou des sujets sans oublier le rôle de la lumière qui unifie les contours, adoucit les aspérités sans en oublier la structure en arêtes et en tétraèdres qui s’imbriquent, formant la structure, le fond et la forme du tableau dont les multiples facettes vues sur un même plan scintillent telles les parois taillées d’une pierre précieuse. Villon déclara à la fin de sa vie en 1956 : « Je passe ma vie à chercher, je chercherai encore car je ne sais pas encore ce que c’est que la peinture », sorte de réponse pleine d’humilité au tonitruant frère Marcel qui énonçait : « Depuis que les généraux ne meurent plus à cheval, les peintres ne sont plus obligés de mourir à leur chevalet. »

Picasso (Pablo, 1881-1973). Signature ‘Picasso’, [1962], a piece of off-white paper signed in blue ball-point pen with underscore and paraph squiggle in Picasso’s holograph, several creases but only light creasing to signature area, 7 x 19.5cm, together with a vintage black and white snapshot from the same occasion showing Picasso with Jacqueline, son Claude[?] plus other family and friends seated outside a cafe in St Tropez, 8 x 12cm. The vendor was on holiday in St Tropez between 8th and 16th September 1962 when she spotted Picasso at the cafe and asked for his autograph which was signed on the only piece of paper that she had to hand. A recent letter confirming this event accompanies the lot. (2).

Nick Nicholls (1914-1991) A View of Dublin from the Phoenix Park Gouache and ink on paper, 32 x 39cm (12½ x 15") Signed and dated '40 Victor Waddington framing label verso Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner's family in the 1940s This work is thought to be after the well known painting by William Ashford (1746-1824) of the same title painted between 1795-98 (which can be found in the National Gallery of Ireland's collection). Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the son of an English father and an Irish mother. As a child he spent a good deal of time with relatives in County Cavan. A quantity surveyor by training, in 1935 he turned to painting, in which he was self-taught. His early pictures are conventional watercolours, but later he embraced surrealism and other forms of abstraction, being influenced by Cézanne, Picasso, Klee and Miró. While living in London he took a studio in Fitzroy Street and exhibited at the influential Spectrum Gallery. With the approach of war he moved to Dublin along with Georgette Rondel and remained there until 1946. He was introduced to the White Stag Group by Basil Rákóczi, whom he met in Dublin. In 1946 he experienced a deep religious conversion and henceforth religion played an important part in his thinking. In 1953 he gave up painting and began to study philosophy and religion, but he returned to painting in the 1960s, being by then influenced by native African art and the work of the French painter Jean Dubuffet (1901-85), with its emphasis on images derived from graffiti and children's art. During his years in Dublin he also wrote and published poetry. Nick Nicholls died in London in 1991.
