After Pablo Picasso, 1889-1973 - ‘Femme dans un Fauteuil et Guitariste’; linocut in brown and black, 28.1 x 34.5cm: together with one other linocut by Picasso titled ‘Femme Couchee et Homme a la Guitare’, 1959, 30.8 x 37cm., both unsigned, (2), (unframed). Both these linocuts were part of a suite of 45 produced between 1958-60 and exhibited at the Galerie Louise Leiris and the Hannover Gallery in 1960, (cat no. 13 and 14)
Alexandra Exter 1884-1949 the bridge signed in Latin l.r. oil on canvas 116 by 73cm.45.5 by 28.75in. Provenance Mrs. Stohl the nurse of the artist; Bought from Mrs. Stohl by the present owner in the early 1980s Exter was neither a Cubist or Futurist or Constructivist or Suprematist or Purist and there lies her deep originality: she made use of these methods to further her research and surpassed them all.' Jean Chauvelin. Alexandra Exter was an artist of many disciplines spanning painting sculpture book illustration and set design. During her studies in Paris she befriended some of the leading figures of the European Avant-garde such as Pablo Picasso Sonia Delaunay Fernand Leger and Max Jacob. ÊExter herself became pivotal in the transfer of Western theories on Cubism and Futurism to Russia and from 1921-24 she taught colour workshops at the Higher Artistic-Technical Workshop (VkhuTeMas). As a result of her work for the Kamernyi Theatre Moscow she to the fore as one of theatre's most innovative designers. With its strong cubist influences and architectural details the offered lot shares many similarities with Exter's compositions from the 1930s and 1940s. This desolate unpopulated landscape echoes the increasing solitude which Exter felt towards the end of her life. For comparable works please see J.Chauvelin (Ed.)
