COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French Writer, Playwright and Filmmaker. An excellent Autograph Statement Signed, Jean Cocteau, one page, 4to, St. Jean Cap-Ferrat, n.d. (1962), in French. Cocteau's statement was evidently written for publication and relates to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, stating, in part, 'Pouchkine has possessed, more than any other poet has, the privilege of pretending to die. The bullet which killed him also granted him everlasting life on earth and in heaven…With a supreme elegance, his work, untranslatable because of its singularity, fluently crosses a plural world which considers more and more the genius as a privilege of the aristocracy…With Pouchkine the great Lord and the common man unite and compose the specific phenomenon to overcome the world´s discords. He reigns over the noble souls whoever they belong to.´ Cocteau has also added a note which he circles in the left margin, and signs with his initials JC, requesting that his handwriting is not reproduced. Matted in purple alongside an unsigned 6.5 x 9.5 photograph of Cocteau standing in a full length pose alongside Russian ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev's tomb at the Isola di San Michele in Venice and framed and glazed in a decorative gold coloured wooden frame to an overall size of 23 x 17. VG Jaime Sabartes (1881-1968) Catalan Spanish Artist, Poet and Writer. CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-born French Artist. A fine A.L.S., Marc Chagall, in Yiddish, one page, 12mo, Paris, 1965, to H. Adam, in Yiddish. Chagall thanks his correspondent for their sympathy and for `your fair article published in the magazine 'Jewish Culture'´, further adding `I appreciate your interest, and how much you heed on art. I see with pleasure that 'Art culture' enables the artist to bring out his inner feelings.´ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Chagall and signed ('Chagall') by him in the return address to the verso. VG An early modernist, Chagall was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic medium ranging from paintings to book illustrations and from stained glass to stage sets. Described as 'the quintessential Jewish artist of the 20th century' (although Chagall himself saw his work as 'not the dream of one people but of all humanity) the artist had two basic reputations, as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. In the 1950s Pablo Picasso remarked 'When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is'.

Andreas CHARALAMBIDESCypriot, b.1938Cypriot landscapeoil on canvassigned and dated 86 lower left50 x 70 cmPROVENANCEprivate collection, Nicosia Charalambides studied at The Royal College of Art under Sir Terry Frost, RA and has since been developing a career of international standing, based in his native historical town of Paphos. He has built a reputation as a figurative painter of the Cypriot generation of the 1960’s.His paintings are composed and executed with the skill of an Old Master, yet they are unmistakably modern. He has forged his own unique pictorial language, which is essentially steeped in the diachronic Mediterranean culture. The Italian 16th and the Dutch 17th century, the early works of Picasso and Modigliani, the Medieval frescoes and mosaics of Sienna and Paphos, and most of all the myths and legends of Hellenism are his main points of reference. The imagery and atmosphere bears an element of magic and archetypal metaphysical energy, and is articulated with frugal forms and a strict palette, where golds and browns are used to model and accentuate selected details and key figures. He held more than twenty solo and more than twenty group exhibitions in Athens, Nicosia, London, Alexandria, Beirut, Baghdad, Kuwait, New Delhi, Amsterdam and New York. His work can be found in many public and private collections in Cyprus and abroad. Notably at The State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art, The Limassol Municipal Gallery, The Paphos Municipal Gallery, The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Centre Foundation, The Central Bank of Cyprus Art Collection and The Archbishop Makarios III Foundation-Cultural Centre.

Mary Swanzy HRHA (1882-1978)Fantastical Figuresoil on board Mary Swanzy Studio Sale Stamp on reverse 21 x 31cm (8 x 12in)Provenance: The Mary Swanzy Studio Sale, Christies, London, 10th May 2007 Lot 319; Private CollectionMary Swanzy was born in Dublin in 1882. Swanzy attended Alexandra College, Earlsfort Terrace, and finishing school at the Lycée in Versailles, France, and a day school in Freiburg, Germany. This education meant that Swanzy was fluent in French and German. She went on to take art classes at May Mannings' studio, under the direction of John Butler Yeats. Manning encouraged Swanzy to study modelling with John Hughes at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Swanzy's first exhibition was with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1905 and she continued to exhibit portraits every year until 1910. In 1905 she went to Paris, and worked at the Delacluse studio. She went on to attend the studio of Antonio de La Gándara in 1906, and took classes at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi. Whilst in Paris Swanzy was exposed to the works of Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso, which made a lasting impression on her. Unlike fellow Irish cubists Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett, she was not concerned with traditional Irish art or themes, opting to foster her own distinctive style.
