Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Avant Garde, Picasso's Erotic Gravures #8 - by Editor Ralph Ginzburg  First Edition; First Printing. Softcover. 28cm x 28cm (11" x 11") Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)  is known as the founder of Cubism. He was born in Málaga in 1881 to an artist father. The family moved to Barcelona in 1895, where Picasso enrolled at the School of Fine Arts. In the beginning of 1901, Picasso moved to Paris for the first time. The city was considered the cultural capital of Europe and attracted many aspiring artists. Soon after, he made his first sale with art dealer Berthe Weill and quickly became an influential figure in the artistic circles of Montmartre. After working in his characteristic Blue Period of 1901‒4 (as seen in Motherhood (1901)), Picasso developed his famous Cubist style in 1906/7. Together with French artist Georges Braque, Picasso extended the technique to Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism (as seen in Fruit Dish, Bottle and Violin (1914)). Picasso was extremely productive during his lifetime, expanding his oeuvre to include etching, sculpture and ceramics. The Spanish artist had a profound influence on the formation of 20th-century Avant-garde art and his works can be found in many notable modern art collections around the world.

Lot 291

Oil on canvas. Oil measurements: 33 x 22 cm. Provenance: old family collection, Barcelona. Isidre Nonell Monturiol (Barcelona, November 30, 1872-Barcelona, February 21, 1911) Spanish painter and draftsman, belonging to modernism. Born in Barcelona on November 30, 1872, he belonged to a relatively wealthy family. He trained in various academies, including that of Luis Graner, 1889. He was part of the group Els Quatre Gats, with Picasso, Rusiñol and others. He lived outside bourgeois society, which he criticized in his paintings. Around 1891 he formed a small group of landscapers, cultivating this genre in small format. In 1893 he studied at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona and held his first exhibition. In 1894 he began to draw small paintings of Cretinos, especially when he went, two years later, with Ricard Canals to Caldas de Bohí. He dedicated this time in Caldas to painting landscapes and cretins. In February 1897 he went to Paris with Canals. There he exhibited, shared a studio with Picasso and made his paintings about the lower social classes. He returned to Barcelona in 1900. From 1901 he made paintings of female figures, such as gypsies, and still lifes. He had a relationship with the gypsy model Consuelo, who became his muse. After Consuelo's early death, Nonell continued painting some gypsy women. Marked by impressionism, he is assigned to modernism. He has also been considered in a certain way a continuator of the vision of the so-called black Spain with Regoyos and Solana. From that chapter are his portraits of cretins and gypsies, showing the lowest classes of society in their misery and pain. Lot 7

The lot consists of four volumes. Two volumes encompassing the first period, numbers 1 to 76 with the original binding, and another two volumes forming the second period, covering numbers 77 to 100, bound in period half leather. The Pèl i Ploma magazine was the artistic publication that most typified Catalan Modernism. Founded as a weekly in Barcelona on June 3, 1899, it became a monthly starting from issue number 77 (June 1901) and ceased publication at number 100 (December 1903).Owned and artistically directed by Ramon Casas, Miquel Utrillo was literary director and contributors included Eugeni d'Ors, Joan Maragall and Apel.les Mestres, among others. Illustrators included Casas himself, Isidro Nonell, Picasso, Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquín Mir, Anglada Camarasa, Pichot, Gosé, Sorolla, etc.Pèl i Ploma's typographic presentation was of extremely high quality.  Editions were published in both Catalan and Spanish and included articles in French. The magazine started as a weekly, to then become a monthly publication with artistic drawings. Ramon Casas, along with friends, was responsible for the material and artistic aspects of the magazine. Other artists like Ramon Pichot, Isidre Nonell, and Pablo Ruiz Picasso also contributed drawings. The collaboration expanded to writers like Eduard Marquina, Manuel de Montoliu, Eugeni de Ors, Joan Maragall, and many others. Joan Maragall, for example, published several compositions, including poems and articles.Pèl i Ploma evolved into a monthly art magazine, printed in the Thomas workshops, with excellent presentation and abundant illustrations of artworks in various colours. Notable contributors in this period included Francesc Rosselló, Xavier Viura, Fèlix Escalas, Josep M. Jordà, Jacint Verdaguer, Josep M. Sert, Jaume Massó i Torrent, J. Torres-García, Salvador Vilaregut, and others. Literary contributions were in Catalan, Spanish, and French.A significant aspect of Pèl i Ploma was the friendship between Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, leading to the dedicated pages of drawings and paintings by Rusiñol and the publication of his literary works. The 100th issue featured portraits of Barcelona journalists, drawn by Ramon Casas, serving as a tribute to the local press, marking the conclusion of Pèl i Ploma in December 1903.While it was stated that Pèl i Ploma was possibly the best magazine ever published, such claims are maybe exaggerated. However, the efforts of Ramon Casas and Miquel Utrillo throughout those hundred issues were exemplary in terms of enthusiasm and generosity. Pèl i Ploma did not entirely disappear with its extraordinary 100th issue, as its animators published another magazine a year later, named "Forma," in the same format and style. Pèl i Ploma, continuing the legacy of "Quatre gats" and the artistic and literary groundwork initiated by "L’Avenç" and "Catalònia," represented the triumph of Catalan Modernism, particularly in its visual aspect, and introduced the spirit of European renewal to Catalonia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Pierrot et Arlequin a la terrace de café is a captivating piece that reflects Picasso's fascination with this theme during his early years. The work portrays two figures from the circus, a motif recurrent in Picasso's oeuvre, especially evident in his cubist explorations. This particular piece is a part of the portfolio titled 'Pablo Picasso. Dix Pochoirs,' published by Galerie Rosenberg in Paris in 1920. The work is based on the painting of the same name. At the time, Rosenberg had opened an exhibition of Picasso's watercolours and drawings relating to his stage designs for Diaghilev's production of Le Tricorne. The portfolio, comprising pochoirs, seem to relate to Picasso's set and costume designs for Parade and showcases Picasso's masterful use of the stencil technique. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
