§ Robert Colquhoun (Scottish, 1914 - 1962) Naked Acrobat on a horse signed lower left "Colquhoun" pen and ink 50 x 40cm (20 x 16in) Provenance: Purchased from Jeffrey Bernard by Nicholas and Elisabeth Luard. From the collection of Elisabeth Luard, Brynmeheryn. Robert Colquhoun was born in Kilmarnoch, Ayrshire. With the help of his art teacher, he was awarded a scholarship to Glasgow School of Art in 1933 and later a travelling scholarship to Paris and Italy. It was as a student that he met Robert MacBryde, who would become his life long partner. They became so inseparable at Glasgow that they were often referred to as the 'Two Roberts'. When Colquhoun won his scholarship to travel funds were found so that MacBryde could go with him. After completing their studies, the pair moved to London in 1941, where they were introduced to the Neo-Romantic circle by Peter Watson. Outspoken, direct and charismatic, they made a huge impact on the artistic scene around them. Their names are mentioned in countless memoirs from Soho during this time, and their Notting Hill studio in Bedford Gardens became a central meeting point for fellow artists and creatives, including Lucian Freud, John Minton and poet George Baker. During the mid-late 1940s, Colquhoun's work featured a common theme of figures in isolation, which show the influence of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jankel Adler and Percy Wyndham Lewis. After being evicted from their Notting Hill studio, MacBryde and Colquhoun's relationship and work faced challenges. Without the artistic community they had created for themselves, and with Colquhoun's work seeing a dip in popularity, they moved around the home of friends, staying for a time in Essex at the home of George Baker's former partner, Elizabeth Smart. Colquhoun died in 1962 at age 47, reportedly in MacBryde's arms; MacBryde died a few years later, in a road accident in 1966. Dirty and with some foxing. One brown spot lower right-hand corner.
§ Peter Rees Roberts (British, 1923-1998) A Panorama of vignettes of Cambridge oil on panel comprising of two equal sized panels 145 x 540cm (57 x 211in) Provenance: Commissioned for Lloyds Bank, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, in the 1970s. During the 1970s and 1980s Rees Roberts executed murals for several shipping companies including the Norwegian Viking and Cunard lines. He completed murals for Williams & Glyn's Bank in the City, for Lloyds Banks in Cambridge and Farnham, and for hospitals in Ealing and Guildford Peter Rees Roberts was known in particular for his mural works and for his career as a freelance national press artist in the 1950s. He studied drawing and illustration at Wimbledon School of Art from 1939 to 1941. After being medically rejected for war service, be began to study mural painting under Professor Ernest Tristram at the Royal College of Art, which had transferred to Ambleside for the duration of the war. His paintings from the Ambleside years continued the tradition of earlier Royal College mural painting students such as Evelyn Dunbar and Cyril Mahoney. Like Dunbar, Rees Roberts painted scenes of workers in rural industries, his 1942 tempera panels of The Bobbin Mill at Ambleside being his most ambitious and successful work at the RCA. Stanley Spencer was a strong mural painting influence at the time, but Rees Roberts said that he was more affected by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera. His large painting of a gasworks, also from his time at Ambleside, is a stylised composition of men and machinery that has echoes of films such as Metropolis or Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times. While at Ambleside, Rees Roberts met Ursula McCannell, another Royal College student, and they married in 1945. Shortly before their meeting, Ursula had made a stone head of a handsome man with strong aquiline features - rather prophetically it could almost be a portrait of him. Rees Roberts in turn painted a tempera panel of Ursula in the style of Raphael, a particularly beautiful portrait that marked his feelings for her. After a holiday at Mousehole in Cornwall, they settled in Farnham near Ursula's parents and Peter taught for a while alongside Otway at the Farnham School of Art. After the war, Rees Roberts exhibited at several London galleries including the Modern Art Gallery, the Leger, the Redfern and the New English Art Club. He began to paint more in oils and his pictures, often of Cornish fishermen, became darker and more in tune with the neo- romantic mood of the time. His 1945 self-portrait, The Painter in Mousehole, has a brooding intensity that is reminiscent of the heroic men in Ursula McCannell's early paintings of the Spanish Civil War. The 1948 Picasso exhibition in London made a strong impact on Rees Roberts and his style moved closer to that of his contemporariesRobert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde. These Cubist-inspired, densely abstracted figurative paintings of the late 1940s gradually became simpler, with an increasingly brighter palette. Through the 1950s and early 1960s Rees Roberts exhibited at the Royal Academy and regularly with the London Group, Unframed. Colours are good. Two holes at the top drilled for fixing.

MARC CHAGALL (RUSSIAN 1887-1985)Jacob leaves his country with his family to visit Egypt [Jacob quitte son pays avec sa famille], 1931-1939 or 1952-1956hand-colored etching41.5 x 32.5 cm (16 1/8 x 12 3/4 in.)signed in plate Chagall lower left; initialed in the margin lower right M. Ch, numbered 62/100 lower leftPROVENANCEFindlay Galleries, Palm Beach, FLLOT NOTES“I did not see the Bible, I dreamed it. ...It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time.” --Marc ChagallUpon being commissioned by Ambrose Vollard to illustrate the Old Testament, Chagall took a trip to the Holy Land, where he allowed himself to be immersed in the history of his ancestors, and gathered inspiration for this monumental project. Between 1931 and 1939, Chagall executed 66 of the full cycle of 105 plates, with a halt brought on by the death of Vollard and the advent of WWII. It was not until 1952 that he returned to the series, completing the remainder by 1956, when they were published by Teriade. A number of the works, the present lot among them, were hand-painted by the artist with his characteristic, bright splashes of color. Picasso once reportedly told Francoise Gilot: “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color is... His canvases are really painted, not just tossed together. Some of the last things he`s done... convince me that there`s never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has.”PLEASE NOTEIf you will be bidding live on auction day, please note that Session I of the Auction (Asian and Russian Fine & Decorative Art), starts at 10:00 AM New York Time and goes from Lot 1 through Lot 254.
