One of his best-known works in sculpture is the Horse and Rider (1960) and can be seen in the Queen's University Collection. He gradually finished his education in sculpting and then slowly turned to painting which is something he had never done before. Since 1985, Crone has been lecturing at the Belfast College of Art and is viewed as one of Northern Ireland's most vital artists today, having had many solo exhibitions in places such as the Tom Caldwell Gallery, the Northern Ireland Arts Council and the Hendricks and Kerlin Galleries in Dublin. § Alessandro Barbaro for Murano, a Picasso style glass head of a girl, on an elongated neck, mounted to a slate base, signed 58cm (23in) Other Notes: The glass factories on the Venetian island of Murano have been making glass for centuries. Over the years, they have pioneered techniques including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicoloured glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. The tools and techniques have changed little over the centuries, as indeed has the underlying artistic nature of the work. The old Murano quote, "Good tools are nice, but good hands are better" reflects the fact that the works are more dependent on the skill of the glass artist than the process. Alessandro Barbaro is a living artist and glass master at Vetreria Artistica Colleoni glassworks. His work is in the private collection of, amongst others, Elton John and Madonna.
§ Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) "Pour mes chers fiancés" - a signed and inscribed title page of L'Oeuvre Gravé de Picasso, dedicated to the engaged couple, Sylvette David and Tobias Jellinek, who later married in 1956 and with sketches of them dated 20.4.56 upper left and signed in pastel "Picasso" lower centre red and blue pastel on paper 27 x 21½cm (11 x 8in) Provenance: Given by Pablo Picasso to Sylvette David and Tobias Jellinek who later married; thence sold to to Eila Grahame Other Notes: "In 1956 the art periodical, VERVE, had an image of Sylvette on the cover and Sylvette and I were given a copy. We went to see Picasso that day and took the book with us, and asked Picasso if he would sign it for us. He went and found some coloured crayons and wrote the dedication, adding the little sketch of us both. The likeness of Sylvette shows how comfortable he was with producing her image, which he had previously worked with for several months. His drawing of me with my new beard is less of a likeness!" Tobias Jellinek, April 2017. Pablo Picasso had been working on a portrait of Sylvette David, aged 19, as the girl with the pony tail before doing the present cartoon sketch. "Sylvette" is the title of one of Picasso's numerous paintings featuring a young woman with a pony tail. The model for the painting, Lydia Sylvette David, also known later by her married name Lydia Corbett, was a French woman who, during the summer of 1953, worked in a pottery studio near Picasso's studio in Vallauris. Finding her appearance appealing, Picasso created 40 works inspired by her. Sylvette's portrait from 2 May 1954 is one of the last of a long series. Picasso's grandson Olivier Widmaier Picasso told the Chicago Sun-Times in 2004 that Sylvette was also the subject of the monumental "Chicago Picasso" which had been a matter of curiosity since it was unveiled. She was said to have been an inspiration for actress Brigitte Bardot and the Roger Vadim film "And God Created Woman". In 1998 Barron's published "Picasso and the Girl With a Ponytail" by Laurence Anholt - a children's book in which a shy teenager named Sylvette meets Picasso in Vallauris and becomes his model. Lydia Corbett is now an artist in her own right. Galleries exhibiting her work include Fosse Gallery Fine Art, with one exhibition being aptly named 'The Girl With the Ponytail', and the Francis Kyle Gallery. Slight damp staining along the upper right margin. Mounted and framed.
§ Thomas 'Sam' Haile (British, 1909-1948), a rare slipware dish, the elongated formdecorated with a fish, impressed seal mark to underside 44½cm (17in), together with accompanying publication 'Sam Haile, Potter and Painter 1909-1948, edited by Barry Hepton Other Notes: Had Sam Haile lived, he would arguably have become one of the leading figures in 20th century ceramics. Born in 1909, he studied ceramics at the Royal College of Art under William Staite Murray, a hugely influential potter. Murray was known to be a casual - bordering on disinterested - teacher who often completely ignored his pupils. Haile, however, attracted his attention, and Murray would go so far as to silently point with his stick at those few pots he felt should be saved from the soak bin. Haile and Murray continued a sporadic correspondence throughout Haile's short life. Haile painted alongside his ceramics and was hugely influenced by the Surrealist movement. His pots were decorated with symbolic figures and dream characters more than a decade before Picasso began working with clay. In 1938, he married Marianne de Trey (see lot 63) and introduced her to pottery. She became a recognised and important potter in her own right; being awarded the CBE in 2006, and died at the age of 102 in 2016. As Sam was a pacifist, they moved to the United States at the outbreak of war, returning to England towards the end of the war where he joined the British Army as a non-combatant. He left an indelible impact on the American potters. After the war, he and Marianne moved to Suffolk and started work at the Bulmer Brickyard where he had a period of making slipware. Eventually, on the advice of Bernard Leach, they settled in Dartington, where tragically after only one year, Haile was killed in a road accident. The critic, A C Sewter, wrote of Haile: '….confronted by pottery such as Haile has been making during the last ten years, even a person not normally interested in the crafts is forced to realise that pottery is an art with a range and power of expression not less than that of painting. In his hands, in fact, pottery seems to become at once painting and sculpture…here is an artist whose hands speak eloquent and varied poetry'. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London holds an extensive collection of Haile's work.
