* Robinson (Henry Peach, 1830-1901) & Cherrill (Nelson King, active 1860s-1870s). Preparing Spring Flowers for Market, 1873, mammoth composite albumen print from multiple negatives, laid on original card mount, signed in the negative by both partners lower left, 'H. P. Robinson & N. K. Cherrill, Tunbridge Wells', a little creasing and bruising to centre left edge, image size 54 x 76 cm, additionally titled and identified in brown ink on lower fillet, original wooden frame with carved rope twist and hatched borders, overall size 73 x 94 cm QTY: (1)NOTE:Henry Peach Robinson opened his first studio in London, and worked in Leamington Spa, before relocating to Tunbridge Wells in Kent. He hired Nelson King Cherrill as an assistant in 1868, and such was his talent that the duo soon entered a business partnership. Until it was dissolved in 1875, (after which Cherrill continued as a successful photographer in New Zealand), the partnership flourished, specialising in artistic photography and studio portraits, and receiving numerous medals for their European and American exhibits. This photograph was probably first exhibited at the Photographic Society of Great Britain, Pall Mall East, London, in 1873. Other examples located are a hand-coloured version at the Getty Museum and one at Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery. A wood-engraved reproduction of the photograph appeared in the Illustrated London News, 8 November 1873.‘Preparing Spring Flowers for Market, 1873, signed by both partners, is a composite picture constructed on similar lines to A Cottage Home, 1859, by Robinson, and his later interiors: When the Day's Work is Done, 1877, and Dawn and Sunset, 1885. However, there are very significant differences between Preparing Spring Flowers for Market and these others. In no other photograph by Robinson are the figures turned away from each other as though the one was not aware of the relationship between them. The unnatural pose of the girl standing with her gaze fixed on the distance, although within the confines of a small cottage, is most unlike any other Robinson portrayal. The effect of such posing is to create a feeling of unease in the viewer. Another difference between this picture and the others is in the treatment of the dimension of depth. The interior of the cottage in Preparing Spring Flowers for Market appears to be shallow owing to the amount of light falling on the walls behind the two girls. In the other three a better impression of depth is given because of the lower lighting levels on the areas behind the figures. These factors lead one to suppose that Cherrill was responsible for the conception, arrangement and lighting of Preparing Spring Flowers for Market. If that is so the indications are that Cherrill was very skilled in the techniques of photography but that he lacked Robinson's sensitivity and skill as an artist.’ Margaret F. Harker, Henry Peach Robinson: Master of Photographic Art, 1830-1901, (Oxford: Blackwell), 1988, p. 58.

Aliens: A Wooden Clapperboard Used In Production,Twentieth Century Fox, 1986,printed in white with 'SLATE' and 'TAKE' in white chalk, the date '1st Feb'86 Interior', in black marker to white tape and with the Director [J. Cameron] and Cameraman [A. Biddle] in white lettering, 15in x 14in (38cm x 35.5cm)Footnotes:Provenance:The Estate of British Cinematographer Adrian Biddle (1952-2005).Adrian Biddle has been referred to as the last of the old and the first of the new in the history of cinematography. He was fortunate enough to get into the closeknit film industry at the age of sixteen by starting as an assistant cameraman working with Gil Woxholt on 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1969). By working up through the camera ranks within the cinematography world he was employed by Ridley Scott's company RSA. He worked on their adverts and was employed as Scott's focus puller on 'Alien'. It was Scott who introduced Adrian to James Cameron who brought him on the production as Director of Photography, a first for Biddle. In the 1980s as film technology and lighting radically started to change, notably while 'Aliens' was in production, Adrian was one of the first to adapt to new techniques while still capturing 'the perfect negative every time' [as stated by Howard Guard for the Guardian]. No doubt his expertise was what assisted in his illustrious career. Working on numerous productions with acclaimed and popular Directors including James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Rob Reiner, Peter R. Hunt, Stephen Herek, and Paul W.S. Anderson. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rosalind Hobley Dahlias I, 2022 Cyanotype on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Rosalind Hobley is an artist living and working in London. She originally trained as a figurative sculptor, and for her portraits and still lifes she works with studio lighting to define shape and form. She uses the early 19th Century technique of Cyanotype because it allows an extra layer of unpredictability. Brushstrokes, blur and loss of definition are all part of the process. **Please note this vehicle is not exempt from the ULEZ charge as incorrectly stated in the catalogue**Just like any other Taxi - air conditioning, floor lighting, walnut dashboard, intercom, chrome handles, Alpine sound system and 1,581 miles from new - well, perhaps not. Offered here is a 19 year old, purpose-built London Taxicab that has covered a mere 1,581 miles from new. The vehicle was owned from new by Sultan Qaboos of Oman as part of his vast vehicle collection in London and was first registered in 2003. It's a London Taxi International TXII Gold model which was a top of the range model at the time and has the advantage of full air-conditioning front and rear, walnut dashboard, chrome grille and door handles and intercom system. At further expense a centre console was fitted in the rear to house a fully remote, high-quality Alpine sound system, and an occasional fold-down passenger seat in the front. The rear compartment also boasts floor lighting and a fold-down wheelchair access ramp. This taxicab looks, drives and smells as you would expect for what is, essentially, a new car. Always kept in heated garages, it has had occasional use only, yet has always been well maintained regardless of how infrequently used. The taxi comes with good service history and whilst it has never been used as a London taxicab, interestingly it is exempt from the city's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge.SpecificationMake: LONDON TAXISModel: INTERNATIONALYear: 2003Chassis Number: SCRT4B6ME3C153410Registration Number: LF03 PPYTransmission: AutomaticDrive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

GLEN GRANT 1986 5 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Glen Grant was the first distillery in Scotland to have electric lighting installed, thanks to its forward-thinking owner, and all-round colourful character, Major James Grant. Grant was an innovator who was one of the first people to realise the potential of exporting whisky abroad. Initially, this paid dividends, and in 1897 The Major began construction of a second distillery across the road. However, as was the case with so many distilleries built around this time, Glen Grant 2 was mothballed after just a few years. Although, it did re-open in 1965 under the name Caperdonich. While it might not be a household name in the UK, Glen Grant is consistently one of the top selling single malts in Italy due to the groundwork laid by legendary importer Armando Giovinetti in the 1960s. It, therefore, seems appropriate that the distillery is now owned by Campari, an Italian company.40% ABV / 75clFill level in low neck. There is a small tear to the carton lid.

FORSTER (E.M) – GEORGE PLATT LYNESGroup of three portrait photographs of E.M. Forster, shown standing full-length or seated on a wooden bench, formally dressed in a pin-stripe suit and tie, two dated on reverse by Forster ('1947' and '1947 with Bob' [the last two words deleted]), another with inscription in black ink ('Taken on the first trip/ much love/ Lincoln [Kirstein] & Fidelma [Cadmus]/ 1971. January'), gelatin silver prints, photographer's '145 East 52 Street New York' stamp on reverse, 230 x 190mm., [1949]Footnotes:'LIKE AN ACTOR WAITING IN THE WINGS': PORTRAITS OF FORSTER BY THE RENOWNED NEW YORK PHOTOGRAPHER GEORGE PLATT LYNES. Forster (and indeed Lincoln Kirstein) has erroneously dated these photographs to his first trip to New York and Washington from April to July 1947. However, other photographs from the same sitting depict him with Bob Buckingham, who accompanied him on a brief trip to New York in May 1949, and was not with him on the earlier occasion. They were taken on the afternoon of 1 June 1949 in the austere setting of George Platt Lynes' studio and have been seen an important moment in the recording of gay relationships (see Wendy Moffat, 'Queer Patrimony: George Platt Lynes's Portraits of E.M. Forster', The Yale University Library Gazette, Vol.82, no.3/4, April 2008, pp.123-140). 'In these dramatic beautifully lit photographs' she writes, 'Lynes manages to make both his subjects their most glamorous selves, and their essential selves... Though notoriously shy, Forster was made comfortable both by Lynes' self-effacing working method, and by Lynes' bona fides as a lover and close friend of several of Forster's closest American friends... Lynes' physical beauty and his extraordinary charm disarmed many of his photographic subjects... His studio embodied a stylized artificiality... famous for his theatrical lighting arrangements and innovative fashion photography' (Moffat, p.129-134). In our photograph, Forster stands at the edge of the composition, the only photograph from the session in which Forster looks directly at the camera. Moffat believes that it was taken surreptitiously, and that Forster did not see a print of it – something which may be borne out by the fact it was presented to Furbank after Forster's death by the impresario and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein and is not annotated by Forster: '...alone, resolute... It captures his owlishness and his vulnerability... The Lynes portrait of Forster – shown to the fewest people – goes the furthest in capturing Forster's queerness' (Moffat, p.136). Towards the end of his life, Lynes sold it with a batch of his most explicit homoerotic nudes to the sexologist Alfred Kinsey for research purposes. The present trio of photographs derive from the collection of Forster's biographer, P.N. Furbank, the standing photograph published in Wendy Moffat, E.M. Forster: A New Life, London, 2010. Provenance: P.N. ('Nick') Furbank (1920-2014); his friend and executor Dr W.R. Owens, the present owner (see adjacent lots). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
