Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Sandy Hook Lighthouse, NJ" Signed lower left. Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Sandy Hook stamp issued April 26, 1990. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest maritime light tower still in use in the United States. Built by the British, the beacon was lighted for the first time on June 11, 1764. Though it was originally called the "New York Lighthouse," the tower stands on the New Jersey side of Lower New York Bay. Upon its completion, Sandy Hook Lighthouse was described as a "house of an octagon figure, having eight equal sides; the diameter at the base, twenty-nine feet; and at the top of the wall, fifteen feet. The lantern is seven feet high; the circumference, fifteen feet. The whole construction of the lantern is iron; the top covered with copper. There are forty-eight oil blazes. The building from the surface is nine stories; the whole from bottom to top, one hundred and three feet." After the revolutionary war, Sandy Hook Lighthouse was ceded to the infant United States by the state of New Jersey, and the new government agreed to maintain the beacon thereafter. One of George Washington's first acts as President was to direct that a light be kept burning permanently at Sandy Hook. Over ten thousand dollars was raised for its maintenance between 1804 and 1817, and by 1832 there were two lighthouses lighting Sandy Hook, one to the north and one to the west. Today, one beacon remains, and will hopefully survive for many years through the efforts of the federal government and the lighthouse preservation movement. Image Size: 13.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 15.5 x 14 in. Unframed. (B12314)

Lights: A G.E.C. Industrial Flame Proof Tripod Light, 1940s, an example of classic British lighting design, the lights are made up of a substantial three-part polished aluminium enclosure with its original flameproof glass lens and an impressive number of manufacturers details cast into the metal emphasising the heritage of the light. Now fully restored rewired and mounted on highly polished aluminium vintage theodolite stands from Swiss manufacturer Kern70cm high by 70cm diameterThese beautifully refined lights were made by British manufacturer G.E.C and salvaged from the old de-commissioned Rolls Royce factory in Derby in the UK.Established in London, in 1886 the General Electrical Company were to become the largest electrical manufacturing organisation in the British Empire and lived up to their description of Manufacturers of everything electrical, throughout their 100 year history. During the mass industrialisation of the 1950s, GEC were often the supplier of choice for lighting the factories, workshops and mills of Britain with their huge range of light fixtures for every application.Rolls Royce built its Nightingale Road site to move production of the Silver Ghost car to Derby from Manchester in 1908. It later became synonymous with the Merlin engine, which powered the Lancaster Bomber, the Spitfire and the Mustang. These lights would have been in use during that ere to illuminate the factory floor for the workforce.

1951 James Comet, 98cc. Registration number MVS 773 (on transferrable), Frame number M 14765 F. Engine number 797 12479 (see text). James' first post-war models were the ML, a 122cc Villiers-engined machine derived from a successful military design, and an autocycle. The next introduction - in 1948 - was the Comet, again Villiers-powered but this time using the 98cc 1F unit, which was housed in a simple loop-type rigid frame fitted with single-tube girder front fork. Standard (direct lighting) and de luxe (battery) models were offered. MVS has been subject to a restoration and has now nicely mellowed. Unused since its acquisition our vendor has decided sell his collection due to his advancing years, it should only require gentle recommissioning. Please note that the V5C states the engine number to be 797 13830.

In addition to worthies of the church, Burdekin seems particularly interested in one Jonathan Martin, a former lapsed Wesleyan preacher and arsonist, who famously set the fire that destroyed large parts of York Minster in February 1829. Burdekin must have visited him in the York County Gaol as the album contains three pages of religious ramblings written directly into the book and dated 15 March 1829, shortly before his transfer to Bethlem Hospital where he died in 1838; '...may the Lord grant that these fue simpler remarks may have a Blessing to all that need them the Lord will not despise the Day of small things your sincere Friend and Brother in the Lord...'. Martin was also known prior to his arson attack for attaching strongly-worded notices denouncing the clergy on various ecclesiastical buildings and one of these, written at Lincoln in October 1827 is included in the collection - 'O clergyman', he writes, 'I right to warn you to repent... Father's right Hand luks down upon you with Dridful Gillisey and he like a clap of Thunder and as quick as lighting... and you go down & live into the Dridful pit of Hell to be turmenteed with the firey Tigers and Lions of Hell...'.Richard Burdekin was a highly respected bookseller and stationer in the city of York. He began his long career in bookselling as a travelling salesman and became famous for riding his favourite horse 30,000 miles in search of orders. He went into business with fellow Wesleyan Robert Spence under the name Spence and Burdekin and was to write Spence's biography in 1837. One of his two shops was destroyed by fire in 1855 but he continued to trade in Parliament Street until his death in 1860. In the words of his obituary published in The Bookseller, 'Mr Burdekin joined the Wesleyan Methodist Society early in life. He became a zealous local preacher and class-leader in that body... As he lived, so he died, a happy Christian, at a good old age'. The album was added to by family members after his death and has remained in the family. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
