Lot 378

1916 Harley-Davidson 1,000cc Model J & Package Truck SidecarRegistration no. BF 7022Frame no. L9034MEngine no. L9034M•Sold new in 1916 with the Package Truck option•Fully restored during 2015/2016•Comes with a Harley-Davidson sports sidecarBoyhood friends William S Harley and Arthur Davidson began experimenting with powered transport in the early 1900s, producing their first complete production motorcycle around 1903. Little more than a motorised bicycle, the first prototype Harley-Davidson had proved fragile, prompting a major redesign and the establishment of a reputation for ruggedness that endures to this day. Like many of their contemporaries, Harley-Davidson laid out their engine along De Dion lines. A single-cylinder four-stroke displacing 24.74ci (405cc), the latter remained in production essentially unchanged until superseded by a 30.16ci (494cc) version in 1909. Of greater significance was the appearance that same year of the firm's first v-twin, though this would turn out to be a failure and was dropped at the year's end. The twin returned for 1911 in redesigned form boasting mechanically operated inlet valves (replacing the 'atmospheric' type inherited from the single) and production really took off. Known by the sobriquet 'pocket valve', this F-head (inlet-over-exhaust) engine - built in 61ci and 74ci capacities (1,000cc and 1,200cc respectively) - would remain in production for the next 20 years. The Harley single's transmission arrangements - direct drive by means of a leather belt - were continued at first on the twin but the need to make better use of the engine's power characteristics, particularly for sidecar pulling, prompted the introduction of a two-speed rear hub for 1914, by which time chain drive and a proper clutch had been adopted. Later that same year a conventional, three-speed, sliding-gear transmission with 'step starter' was introduced on the top-of-the-range version of the twin which, with full electrical equipment, was listed from now on as the Model JD. Periodically revised and up-dated, the Model J had gained a front brake, stronger fork and pumped lubrication by the time production ceased in 1929.Dating from 1916, this wonderful Model J is attached to a Harley-Davidson Package Truck, a commercial load-carrier introduced by H-D in 1915. As supplied, the Package Truck was a basic cargo container mounted on a sidecar chassis, its flat sides being perfect for advertising; recognising this, the factory offered a sign-writing service to its customers, while the latter were soon adapting the Package Truck to suit the requirements of their individual businesses. The Package Truck was a runaway success and would remain in production for 42 years until replaced by that other famous Harley commercial vehicle: the Servi-Car.This Harley-Davidson Model J was sold new in 1916 with the Package Truck option and has the optional three-speed gearbox and electric lighting system first offered on the 1915 models. Unusually, this machine retains its original and very rare Remy magdyno and its original 'hand-blown' headlamp bulb, the latter restored and in working order. We are advised by the vendor that only one other example retains its original electrical system. The combination was treated to a complete 'last nut and bolt' restoration during 2015 and 2016; all the nickel brightwork was re-plated, the panelling repainted, and the engine and gearbox overhauled. Other noteworthy features include a Corbin speedometer and embossed Harley-Davidson leather luggage set. Used for display at events, including Stafford in April 2016, this wonderful Harley-Davidson Package Truck should require only minimal re-commissioning before taking to the road. A restored Harley-Davidson sports sidecar, which was attached to the original chassis in the early 1920s, is included in the sale, and the combination also comes with a dating certificate and V5C document. Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

It was founded as a drapery business in 1838 by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and known as Kennington & Jenner . Kennington retired in 1861 and the store became Charles Jenner and Co. in 1874. Jenner retired in 1881 and left the store to his junior partner James Kennedy. Kennedy and his descendants, the Douglas-Miller family, ran the business from 1881. Fire destroyed the original buildings in 1892 and in 1893 the Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store which subsequently opened in 1895. The new building was designed with an elaborate carved frontage supported by caryatid figures which were, at Charles Jenner's insistence, intended 'to show symbolically that women are the support of the house'. The new store included many technical innovations such as electric lighting and hydraulic lifts. Jenners has held a Royal Warrant since 1911 and this remarkable carved and painted crest was situated in the gallery before 2005 when the store was sold to House of Fraser , the name having been retained.

Property of a deceased's estate1927 Raleigh 248cc Model 14Registration no. SV 4480Frame no. SABTVRO3663180216 (see text)Engine no. M8075Odometer reading: None fittedMoT expiry date: Unknown•Typical lightweight Raleigh of the Vintage era•Believed an older restoration•Requires re-commissioningBritain's best-known and longest-surviving bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905 and again from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. During the 1920s Raleigh's line-up expanded to include machines of numerous different capacities, both sidevalve and overhead-valve engined, ranging from a 175cc unitary construction lightweight to a hefty 998cc v-twin for sidecar pulling. A typical example of a lightweight Raleigh of the Vintage era, the Model 14 was manufactured between 1925 and 1927 and was powered by a 248cc single-cylinder sidevalve engine driving via a three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox with chain final drive. There was no front brake; presumably it was considered that the machine's relatively modest performance rendered one unnecessary. The Model 14 would have set you back around £40 when new, depending on the ancillary equipment specified. Noteworthy features of this particular example include a P&H headlamp, a DEKLA bulb horn, and a brass plaque showing that it was supplied new by Woottens of Oxford. In 1993 the machine was issued with a DVLA frame number and given an age-related registration number, and it is likely that it was restored at around this time. (These DVLA 'SABTVRO' numbers are sometimes issued if it has not been possible to locate an original manufacturer's number.) The engine turns over but it is not known when 'SV 4480' last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Accompanying documentation consists of an old-style V5 document and the aforementioned correspondence.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 43/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1948 Vincent-HRD 998cc RapideRegistration no. EBX 969Frame no. R3155Engine no. F10AB/1/1165 (see text)REAR FRAME NO. RC3155 (see text)CRANKCASE MATING NOS. L88/L88 Odometer reading: 693 miles, believed since restoration - not warranted MoT expiry date: Unknown•Present ownership since 1980•Extensively modified•Requires re-commissioningEver since the Series-A Rapide's arrival in 1937, the Vincent v-twin has been synonymous with design innovation and engineering excellence. But above all else it was the v-twin's stupendous performance that captivated motorcyclists. With a top speed approaching 120mph, and bettering it in the Black Shadow's case, the Vincent v-twin was the fastest road vehicle of its day.Vincent Owners Club records confirm this machine's upper frame number and engine number pertain to a 1948 Series-B Rapide while the crankcase mating numbers are correct for engine number 'F10AB/1 /1165'. There is evidence of an underlying stamp to engine prefix 'F10AB'; however, this is believed to be a factory error as the typeface appears correct. Rear frame number 'RC3155' is a non-factory re-stamp (note the additional 'C' and different typeface from that of the upper frame number, particularly the '3'). 'EBX 690' was first registered in Carmarthenshire and comes with an old-style continuation logbook issued in 1960, which erroneously records the frame number with an additional '5'. Two owners are listed, the second of whom, Mr Kenneth Johnson of St Helens, sold the Vincent to the late owner in February 1980 (sales receipt on file). 'EBX 690' incorporates numerous modifications including Lightning-type brakes, coil ignition, Amal Monobloc carburettors, alloy wheel rims, rev counter and clock, Black Shadow type speedometer, and only one rear brake. The engine turns over but it is not known when the machine was last run. Sold strictly as viewed, it will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. The machine is offered with a substantial file of history to include period photographs, bills, correspondence, old V5 document, MoTs, maintenance manuals, and an original Vincent Rider's Handbook.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 45/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1953 Velocette 349cc MACRegistration no. 602 XUFFrame no. RS3003Engine no. MAC 17893Odometer reading: 22,771 miles not warrantedMoT expiry date: 18 May 2009•Dating from the first year of sprung-frame MAC production•Believed an older restoration•Requires re-commissioningIn 1933 Veloce Limited augmented its established range of overhead-camshaft models with an overhead-valve 250 - the MOV. The newcomer's power unit was a 'high camshaft' design with enclosed valves, and the compact and sprightly machine featured a four-speed gearbox equipped with the company's new foot-change mechanism. The following year an overhead-valve 350 built along MOV lines appeared. This was the long-stroke MAC, which was subsequently bored out to create the 500cc MSS. Post-war, the trio of overhead-valve Velocettes continued much as before, with rigid frames and - initially - Webb girder forks. The MAC gained an alloy cylinder barrel and 'head for 1951, as well as Velocette's own telescopic front fork in place of the previous Dowty, and was further updated with a swinging-arm frame in 1953. The MAC was last produced in 1960.Dating from the first year of sprung-frame MAC production, this apparently nicely restored example was purchased by the current registered keeper in November 2012, being described by the seller at that time as in beautiful condition, and cosmetically to a very high standard (sales receipt and advertisement on file). The age-related registration was issued in 2007, which is possibly when the machine was restored. The engine turns over but it is not known when '602 XUF' last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Accompanying documentation includes a V5C document, expired MoT (2009), and the aforementioned paperwork. An original service manual and spare parts book are included in the sale.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 50/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1956 AJS 348cc Model 16MSRegistration no. 758 XUPFrame no. A48652 (see text)Engine no. 56/16MS 30084Odometer reading: 109 miles believed since restoration, not warrantedMoT expiry date: 25 May 2010•Present registered keeper since June 2009•Believed older restoration•Requires re-commissioningHonest and workaday, the typical British '350s' of the 1950s were chosen chiefly for their inherent strength, dependability, and economy rather than outright speed. Announced in June 1945, AMC's offerings in this important market sector were the Matchless G3L and AJS Model 16, models identical in all essential respects. The pair shared the same 93mm stroke as their 500cc brethren, coupled to a 69mm bore, and could be distinguished by the different magneto position: forward of the cylinder in the AJS, behind it in the Matchless. Housed in a rigid frame with Teledraulic front fork, the rugged overhead-valve engine drove through a four-speed gearbox. Hairpin valve springs were adopted for 1949 and a swinging-arm frame introduced, the latter initially for export only but available in the UK from 1950, machines so-equipped being suffixed 'S'. Testing one of these stalwarts in 1961, Motor Cycling recorded a modest mean top speed of 76mph but found that when toured at a relaxed pace across country, an excellent 86mpg was achievable. Apparently restored, this AJS 16MS has its frame number stamped in two locations: correctly to the saddle tube and also to the headstock, the latter being a non-factory stamping. It is not known when '758 XUP' last ran or its present mechanical condition. It should be noted that the kickstart mechanism is jammed, but the engine does turn over when the machine is pushed in gear. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Belonging to the present registered keeper since June 2009, this AJS motorcycle is offered with a V5C document and a photocopy 'AJS Practical Guide covering models from 1945'.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 42/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate, 1957/1959 BSA 499cc DB32/DBD34 'Gold Star Special'Registration no. FSJ 175Frame no. CB32 6433Engine no. DBD34GS 3918 (see text)• Part of deceased's estate• Uprated to 499cc• Clubman's trimOdometer reading: 317 miles believed since restoration, not warrantedMoT expiry date: 9 August 2010In 1954 BSA introduced the CB Gold Stars – the first of what came to be known colloquially as the 'Big-Fin' types. This was further refined and endowed with increased power output for the DB types which followed a year or so later. Whilst this was the final iteration of the 350, the 500 was further uprated in 1956 to what has become, for many, the ultimate version of the Gold Star, the DBD34. Unsurprisingly, from that point on, many wanted to own the DBD version, and for some, with the older, less powerful models, the easy way to do this was simply to slip in a replacement DBD motor as the cycle parts for the previous swinging arm types were so similar. This appears to be what has taken place with FSJ 175. Frame CB32 6433 started life as a 1957 DB32, and, at some point, a previous owner has fitted a 500 engine with a non-factory stamped engine number. This breathes through a 38mm MkII Amal Concentric carburettor, and transmission is via a RRT2 gearbox. Equipped with an 8-inch front brake, and valanced alloy rims, FSJ represents an economy entry into 500 Gold Star ownership.Last MoT'd in 2009, FSJ's engine turns over but it is not known when the machine last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the suitability and compatibility of the component parts of this machine, together with its authenticity.Documentation comprises a current V5C, an older-type V5C, older V5, some expired MoT certificates, a dating certificate showing incorrect date, and miscellaneous papers.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 49/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate c.1955/1960 BSA 649cc 'Rocket Gold Star' ReplicaRegistration no. THY 940Frame no. CA7 4910 (see text)Engine no. DA10R 14961 (see text)• Part of a deceased's estate• Replica of iconic British twin• Requires re-commissioningOdometer reading: 5,651 miles, believed since restoration - not warranted MoT expiry date: 28 February 2011The Rocket Gold Star was introduced in 1962, running through only to 1963, and approximately 1500 examples of the model were sold before it was discontinued. Thereafter, perhaps due to its rarity, it certainly captured the imagination of many, and it became a feature of most collectors' wish lists, which, in turn, led to it being copied many more times than it had ever been made. THY 940 was purchased by the deceased owner in 2010 (receipt on file). Last MoT'd in 2010, THY's engine turns over but it is not known when the machine last ran or its present mechanical condition. Sold strictly as viewed, the machine will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use.It should be noted that the frame number is not a factory stamping. The engine began life fitted to a Golden Flash, and when uprated to Super Rocket style with the alloy cylinder head etc, someone has inserted an 'R' in the engine number to denote the change. The 'R' does not appear on the V5C. The gearbox is stamped RRT2, but this is not a factory stamping, so the internals are unknown. A tachometer is fitted, driven from the timing chest magneto position.Prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the suitability and compatibility of the component parts of this machine, together with its authenticity. The enduring popularity of machines such as this is the attraction of owning a machine which looks, and performs, just like the real thing at a fraction of the price. Documentation comprises an older-type V5C, some expired MoT certificates, the aforementioned purchase receipt, and sundry papers.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 45/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1992 Ducati 750SSRegistration no. K516 WPHFrame no. ZDM750SC 000879Engine no. ZDMA2C 000899Odometer reading: 7,153 km - not warrantedMoT expiry date: 21 July 2011•With the present (third) owner since 2010•Requires re-commissioning•Trademark 'trellis' frameThe arrival of Ducati's all-new, eight-valve, water-cooled v-twin 851 Superbike in the late 1980s led to a comprehensive re-structuring of the range, the appearance of this range-topping WSBK contender creating a niche for a series of super-sports roadsters. That gap would be filled first by the 900SS that arrived in 1991, reviving one of the great model designations from the Bologna factory's past. The newcomer used a development of Ducati's long running 'belt drive' v-twin motor, designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni, that had first appeared in 1978 in the Pantah 500. Air-cooled and with two-valves-per-cylinder, the 80bhp 900SS was simpler, easier to maintain and, of course, less costly than the 851 Superbike. In style though, it gave nothing away to its more exotic cousin, having the same distinctive 'trellis' frame, now an established Ducati trademark. Handling was, needless to say, exemplary. 750SS and 600SS versions followed. Relatively light (395lbs) and nimble, and with a maximum power output of 60bhp, the 750SS was no sluggard, boasting a top speed of more than 124mph. Purchased by the late (third) owner in 2010, this Ducati 750SS currently displays a total of 7,153 kilometres (approximately 4,400 miles) on the odometer and is presented in age-related condition. It is not known when the machine was last used, although the presence of a 2011-expired tax disc may be an indication. Requiring a replacement battery, no attempt has been made to start the Ducati, which will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration, including a major service and change of cam belts, before returning to the road. Accompanying paperwork includes correspondence, a V5C document, expired MoTs, and the original instruction manual and warranty/service booklet (blank). Large-capacity v-twins have been Harley's stock-in trade since the Edwardian era, their various incarnations progressing through countless technological developments that continue to this day. Towards the end of AMF's 1970s stewardship though, the company's future looked less than assured, so the success of the Low Rider was all the more welcome. Styled by Willie G Davidson and introduced for 1977, the Low Rider was the latest in the FX custom/cruiser line that had commenced in 1971 with the Super Glide. But whereas the latter was positioned mid-way between the Electra Glide and Sportster, the Low Rider was a bolder statement altogether. Its raked out forks, stepped seat and minimalist looks were clearly a nod in the direction of the chopper movement, which had been restyling Harleys in this manner for decades. Low and mean-looking, the first Low Rider set new standards of 'cool' among production motorcycles that have yet to be surpassed.Offered here is an example of the Low Rider Sport, a variant newly introduced for 1987 that featured improved suspension and a smaller front mudguard. Acquired by the late (second) owner in January 1994, the Harley boasts a Supertrapp Performance silencer and a carburettor air scoop, and currently displays a total of only 2,664 miles on the odometer. It is not known when the machine was last run and whilst the machine cranks, it does not start. SMTTJ910TM6245478Engine no. 246542Odometer reading: 4,208 miles - not warrantedMoT expiry date: 21 September 2013•Present ownership since 2009•Requires re-commissioning•Fitted windscreen, engine bars, passenger backrestEver since the re-emergence of a newly revitalised Triumph in 1990, enthusiasts had been eagerly waiting the revival of the Bonneville brand, one of the most evocative names in motorcycling history. Ten years would elapse before Triumph felt ready to do so, having by then emphatically established its credentials as a builder of thoroughly modern motorcycles rivalling the best from Japan and Europe. Triumph's design brief for the new Bonneville was to emulate the classic style of the late 1960s version while incorporating the best of modern technology in the engine, transmission and running gear. The need to recapture the sound and feel of the original meant that the power unit had to be an air-cooled parallel twin with 360-degree crankshaft, while applying similar criteria to the cycle parts dictated wire-spoked wheels and a twin-shock rear end. At 790cc (initially) the new 8-valve engine was bigger than any preceding Bonneville while a balancer shaft - something the original could have done with - was deemed essential to dampen vibration inherent in the traditional engine architecture. The new Bonneville debuted to critical acclaim at Munich in 2001 and before long the concept had been expanded to include cruiser-style Bonneville America, super-sports Thruxton and various other models such as the T100. Acquired by the late (fourth) owner in July 2009, this Bonneville T100 currently displays a total of only 4,208 miles on the odometer. Well equipped, it boasts a windscreen, engine protector bars, and a passenger backrest. It is not known when the machine was last run and although the machine cranks, it will not start. c.1958 Innocenti Lambretta 150LDRegistration no. RMW 146Frame no. *319456* 150LDEngine no. 150LD *328708Odometer reading: 4,579 miles – not warrantedMoT expiry date: Unknown *Highly Original*Potentially original mileage *Ideal for sympathetic restoration Manufactured by the Italian industrial giant Innocenti, the Lambretta scooter gained instant acceptance in the immediate post-war years, its cleanliness and convenience in particular appealing to those who regarded the true motorcycle with suspicion. In the UK, Italian scooters were adopted as favoured transport by the 'Mods', becoming one of the enduring style icons of the 1960s. Predecessor of the Li and TV series, the LD arrived in 125cc form in 1951 and became available with 150cc engine three years later. The LD 150's air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine produced 6bhp (1.2bhp more than the 125) giving the model a top speed of around 50mph. LD production continued until the end of the 1950s. Believed to be original and unrestored, this LD150 displays 'Lambretta Conessionaire Ltd, Wimbledon' plaques throughout and is fitted with air-intake side panels. The machine turns over but does not fire into life. Accordingly, the machine is sold strictly as viewed requiring recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent. Offered without documents.
