Marius-Ernest Sabino (Italian, 1878-1961) L’IDOLE (PAIR) c.1928 opalescent glass; (2) each titled at base lower centre; with 'Sabino France' atbase on reverse 6½ x 5 x 4in. (16.51 x 12.70 x 10.16cm) Collection of George and Maura McClelland The Hunter Gatherer - The Collection of George and Maura McClelland, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, 2004, p.145 (one of pair, illustrated) Ernest-Marius Sabino was born in Sicily in 1878 and moved to France with his family when he was young. He attended the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After World War I, Sabino founded a factory that manufactured traditional light fixtures of wood or bronze, and later switched to glass fixtures. A contemporary of Rene Lalique, Sabino designed his glassware and lighting himself until 1930, when he hired a production manager named Grivois, whose objective was to make lighting transcend banality. Sabino used pressed and moulded pattern glass in bas-relief. His commissions included lighting for hotels and restaurants, as well as for the 1935 oceanliner Normandie. Sabino's work was shown at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, as well as at the 1925 Salon d'Automne, for which he had designed the general illumination of the halls, passageways, and antechambers.
L48 'The Theberton Zeppelin' - A Great War 'Souvenir' Walking Cane the alloy grip cast from aluminium from the ill-fated airship, inscribed 'L48 Brought Down at Theberton 1917' mounted on a wooden shaft, with brass ferrule, 76cm long. On the night of 16th June 1917, the L48 was one of four airships sent to attack London. After dropping bombs on Harwich, the airship tried to return home by heading east. However its compass had frozen at the high altitude and, unknown to its crew, it drifted north in the dark along the Suffolk coast. The airship was caught in searchlights and antiaircraft guns opened up, although the Zeppelin was too high to be harmed by these. Several aircraft took off to attack the airship, but although firing at the Zeppelin, the planes could not gain the altitude to inflict any damage. In an effort to escape British airspace before dawn, the Zeppelin captain gave orders to descend to reach more favourable winds. Captain RHMS Saundby in his aircraft, noticed the descent beginning, and attacked again. His bullets hit the Zeppelin this time and the tail of the airship ignited and the huge airship began to fall to earth, lighting up the sky as it did so. The vast structure crashed into the ground at Holly Tree Farm in Therberton, near Leiston, Suffolk. Three of the German crew managed to jump out of their gondola as it hit the ground and then watched in horror as the flames consumed the entire Zeppelin as well as sixteen fellow crew members, the burnt wreck of the airship was visited by thousands for weeks afterwards and many fragments were distributed, both officially and unofficially.

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful pottery amphora with ribbed body, constricted rim, and applied handles from the rim to the shoulder. The base is rounded. The accumulation of sea life on its body is mostly white, with some startling flashes of bright purple. Comes with custom stand. Size: 12.5" W x 18" H (31.8 cm x 45.7 cm); height on stand: 19.5" (49.5 cm).Lacking its cork and pitch stopper, the original contents of this amphora are unknown; based on the globular size and shape, it was most likely used to transport olive oil (smaller ones were for stewed fruit or salted fish, while larger ones were used for wine). Amphorae formed the basis of the Roman economy as storage vessels for transporting goods throughout the Empire, with examples found from North Africa to Britain. The pointed base on this one is standard, and was intended for storage in Roman warehouses in soft ground and for transport on ships by placing it through a specially-designed rack and roping it through the handles to others. This vessel was found in the sea and bears evidence of that in the form of barnacles and other white deposits on its body; it came from North Africa, a major site of olive oil production (alongside Spain and France) in the Roman economy. This oil was used for cooking, lighting, and, in some cases, bathing; one estimate suggests that each Roman legion consumed 1370 amphorae of olive oil per year! Provenance: Ex-Private New York Collection; Ex-New York Collector GF Condition: Large areas of the surface have sea encrustation and calcifications.
