Victorian hand written journal / log book dated 1877, relating to a canoe called Minnehaha and its travels on the Stroud canal, possibly the river Frome, the Gloucester and Sharpness canal and the river Severn, by Henry Theo Humphridge. The journal opens with a photograph of the canoe inside the front cover, the log book then begins on October 6th 1877 with the launch on the canal from Halford's shop and a two mile trip, further trips on the river and canal are recorded in detail, and the writer mentions coming last in his first race. Other trips include along the Severn from Gloucester to Stonebench, carried across meadows and back to the boathouse, lots of references to Gloucester and Sharpness canal, bridges and conditions, shooting the weir at the parting (probably Hempsted) and the accompanying boat 'Aunt Sally' almost coming to grief with half a boat of water and continuing on to Maisemore. Further trips down the Severn to Newnham, Minsterworth and Garden Cliff (Westbury) where the canoe was loaded onto the train for the return trip to Gloucester, during which a drunken sailor had to be turned out of the train carriage at Grange Court for abusive behaviour. April 8th 1878 Tewkesbury and back (albeit the upstream journey was aboard a tug), tales of rowing on the Avon then back via Lower Lode and Wainlodes, another trip including a jolly lunch at Ashleworth, the landlady lighting a fire, May 25th trip up the river Leadon including a capsize etc etc
