Joris van Son (Antwerp 1623-1667)Still life of oysters, grapes and lemons on a draped table with cherries and a roemer of white wine signed and dated 'J. VAN. SON/ 1656' (on the table edge, lower left)oil on canvas30.6 x 43.4cm (12 1/16 x 17 1/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceSale, Sotheby's, London, 28 March 1979, lot 61Born in Antwerp in 1623, Joris van Son became a member of the guild of Saint Luke there in 1643. Heavily influenced by the work of Jan Davidsz. De Heem (Utrecht 1606-1684 Antwerp), van Son most likely encountered the work of de Heem in his native city during his formative years. Van Son's fruit still lifes, such as the present painting, are particularly indebted to the elder artist's work although van Son's works are characterised by a softer, more suffused lighting.A similar arrangement of the oysters, lower left, with the grapes behind, appears in a further work by van Son of two years earlier, which was offered at Sotheby's, London, 10 April 2013, lot 41.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
GLEN GRANT 2005 GORDON & MACPHAIL SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Glen Grant was the first distillery in Scotland to have electric lighting installed, thanks to its forward-thinking owner, and all-round colourful character, Major James Grant. Grant was an innovator who was one of the first people to realise the potential of exporting whisky abroad. Initially, this paid dividends, and in 1897 The Major began construction of a second distillery across the road. However, as was the case with so many distilleries built around this time, Glen Grant 2 was mothballed after just a few years. Although, it did re-open in 1965 under the name Caperdonich. While it might not be a household name in the UK, Glen Grant is consistently one of the top selling single malts in Italy due to the groundwork laid by legendary importer Armando Giovinetti in the 1960s. It, therefore, seems appropriate that the distillery is now owned by Campari, an Italian company.Bottled: 201643% ABV / 70cl
