SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian Theologian, Musician, Philosopher & Physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. A.L.S., Albert Schweitzer, two pages, 4to (the second page with the lower third removed, not affecting the text or signature), Lambarene, 3rd January 1948, to Mr. Platz, in French. Schweitzer thanks his correspondent for their good wishes, which he reciprocates, and continues to enquire whether he could obtain two motors from Platz at a price the hospital could afford, explaining ‘I have to move towards electric lighting for all the consulting and dressing rooms in the big building, not just in the operating theatre, and also in the pharmacy, which is too dark. The people that have looked at the question of new lighting tell me that a Bernard motor would be enough to power it. However, the motor of the refrigerator (also a Bernard) is beginning to show signs of unreliability, the result of age and use. Therefore I have to think of replacing it with a similar one…’ Together with a printed 8vo illustrated brochure entitled Lettres de l`Hopital du Dr Albert Schweitzer a Lambarene, issue No.3., August 1931, signed and inscribed by Schweitzer in dark fountain pen ink at the head of the cover and dated 31st March 1948.
