Lot 50

A pair of fine gilt and patinated bronze three light figural candelabra in late Louis XV taste, by Henri Vian (French, 1860-1905), late 19th century, the foliate and fruiting sconces above scrolled conforming reeded arms supported by putti, the rockwork socles above waisted and guilloche moulded square section bases, each inscribed h. Vian to the plinth 45cm high, 32cm wide Henri Vian's Parisian foundry was well-known for its production of fine quality bronze lighting and ornament in various 18th century styles. The putti adorning the present lot are closely inspired by Roman Baroque models, said to have originated in the circle of Francois Duquesnoy (1597-1643) and Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654). The putto playing the horn is usually depicted with a further similar instrument below (see for example Christie's New York, The Abbott Guggenheim Collection: A New York Kunstkammer, 28 January 2015, lot 105), while the second seated infant is often portrayed with a conch. Two pairs are also held in the Wallace Collection. In the Museum's catalogue, Robert Wenley makes specific mention of the models' popularity as mounts for candelabra in later centuries. One such pair similar to the present lot, dating from the early 19th century, is illustrated there. See Robert Wenley, French Bronzes in the Wallace Collection, London 2002, p. 84

Lot 2200

A gilded gesso framed Turneresque Oil painting on Oak panel, 7' 5/16" x 10" depicting the Chateau de Blois in the Loire valley, the chateau prominent above a deep chasm with figures, some carrying standards near a Greek style temple amidst dense foliage in the gloom, in the sky over the chasm appear to be the makings of a white cloaked figure. The work is unusual in that the paint has in some areas been levelled with the finger or thumb of the artist and finger or thumb prints are clearly evident in those areas. The frame bears a label "TURNER-J.M.W. 1775- 1851". Verso are two gummed collection labels "X4963" and a typewritten label "Goodrich Court....Ross,Nr. Monmouth. Gallery Dispersal August 1946. Turner Joseph Mallord William, born 1775-1851. Elected Royal Academy in 1802, most of his pictures were bequeathed to the nation and are now in the National Art Gallery. In the Goodrich Court sale of 1946, the picture was catalogued under a heading "J.M.W. Turner" and was lot 731 "Landscape with city and figures, panel 8" x 10" (damaged)". It is thought that the painting was described as damaged as it included very dark areas that on first sight appear to be burnt. Under powerful lighting, it is not the case, the painting appears to all intents and purposes undamaged. It is clearly of considerable age, the frame having rebated cross-braces to the corners visible verso. It may well date from the era of Turner's painting tour of the Loire valley circa 1820-30's.

A c1897 Union Lamp Co. 'Williams Globe' kerosene-powered bicycle lamp. Manufactured under the patents of E. L. Williams, the 'Globe' series of lamps were designed for boulevard riding at night with sixteen coloured multi-faceted red, green, blue and opaque, glasses giving, when lit, a sparkling and colourful effect. Much admired by lady riders who took their exercise riding in public parks of an evening and wanted to be noticed! Several different versions were manufactured, and this lamp is an example of the rarest found today, retaining its bail, suspension arm and mounting bracket, the object of the lamp design being for it to appear to float and bounce in front of the bicycle. In very sound condition, the lamp has not been molested and retains undamaged glasses, opening side window for lighting, winding burner and the aforementioned suspension bracket. A particularly rare lamp with only six lamps of this type known to survive in complete condition. ECL 71 (2)

Lot 396

A c1900 Elrich & Graetz of Berlin 'Triumph' Acetylene Gas Lamp. This particularly rare bicycle lamp design was retailed by Max Retemeyer in Berlin for a short period, possibly less than 18-months. Two types were offered, a version without a manually-operated lighting device, and the more expensive version where an ignition system was position behind the burner head. The basic version is illustrated in ECL 114. The example offered here is the rarely found mechanical-ignition version. The retaining pin placed behind the burner head removes to allow access to the flint chamber and gear wheel. The water reservoir is the vertical cylinder with a control valve, carrying bail and overflow system, the carbide of calcium container is the horizontal cylinder at the base. This has a screwed lid inscribed with the maker's name, opening to reveal a carbide holder with a hinged lid. Nickel-plated to a very high standard, the lamp represents late 19th century bicycle lamp manufacture at its best. 6½-inches (16cm).
