Empire style bed. Fernandina period, Spain, ca.1820.Mahogany, palm and lemongrass.Ornaments in gilded carving.Measurements: 170 x 155 cm.(canapé); 155 x 210 x 180 cm. (total).During the reign of Ferdinand VII, the most aristocratic Spanish furniture tended to emulate features of the Empire Style of Napoleonic France. This bed brings together the most characteristic elements of that desire to recreate luxury and imperial glory. On the one hand, the gondola typology, forming an ascending curve joining the headboard and footboard in a single line, is prototypical of the period. Likewise, the proliferation of gilded carvings inspired by Greco-Roman iconography: festoons, cornucopias or horns of plenty, here topped with beautiful floral bouquets. The quality of the carving can also be appreciated in the erotes, worked in rounded bulk, which serve as atlantes supporting the bed or the putti perched on the cylindrical backrests. The bed rests on a rectangular base with marquetry filleted in limoncillo, being mahogany and palm the noble woods used in the furniture. The whole exudes timeless solemnity, full of references to the classical world, but freely reinvented. This is a piece of furniture with late neoclassical roots. During the reign of Ferdinand VII, the stylistic legacy of the First French Empire was perpetuated, balancing Greco-Roman, neoclassical and Egyptian influences.
