The Tester Bed was made throughout the 17th century. There would be holes in the bed rails through which ropes could be threaded to support a rush bed mat and mattress. Curtains would have been hung at the sides and foot for privacy and warmth. The 'tester' referred to the solid wooden ceiling. Although the carvings and inlays of the wooden framework became a feature, the rich fabrics suspended from their canopies were often the tester's chief glory. By the 18th Century the style of bed moved to the more familiar four poster, with curtains used again for privacy and warmth. There have been historic alterations and additions, but with many original features and the overall condition is good
