Important transitional Fernandino-Isabeline bed, ca. 1835.Rosewood and inlaid with brass and precious stones.Measurements: 125 x 130 x 210 cm.The piece of furniture has the characteristic structure of the Fernandine style, although some of the features of the Elizabethan style are beginning to appear, such as the masterly marquetry of the waist of the bed, as well as the inlaid brass and precious stones. Thus, we are faced with a piece of furniture with a monumental structure characteristic of the Empire style, which sees its Spanish reflection in the Fernandine language. Also typical of this language is the combination of noble wood with gilded metal, in this case brass, highlighting the different parts of the structure by means of mouldings, and also composing reliefs. In fact, it was typical of the period to replace the earlier carvings with applications of bronze or gilt metal, as can be seen here on the legs, in the form of a seated lion. The piece of furniture is profusely and masterfully decorated, reflected both in the mouldings in the form of scrolls that crown both the headboard and footboard, and in the mixtilinear structures of the corners or in the elaborate gemstones that decorate the sides of the flanks, the latter with a floral and lattice design. Characteristic of Fernandine furniture is the influence of its neoclassical roots, inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity, with ornamental motifs such as garlands, worked symmetrically around the waist of the bed, or chevrons on the sides of the furniture. The headboard and footboard form a single body topped with a scroll, subtly curved outwards in the Elizabethan style, a decoration that is continued in the ornate mixtilinear skirt, showing a symmetrical pattern that is carved with a harp-shaped motif.
