A MAHOGANY FOUR POSTER IN THE MANNER OF GEORGE HEPPLEWHITE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY AND LATERThe arched channelled shaped tester painted with flower sprays and ribbon tied drapery swags, surmounted by acorn finials, the hangings by Colefax and Fowler Approximately 265cm high, 220cm long, 176cm wideProvenance: Supplied by Oliver Messel for the Children's Bedroom at Flaxley AbbeyCondition Report: Overall scratches, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use. Possibly made out of parts from multiple beds, the canopy is slightly larger than the base creating a slight distortion of shape. It has been assembled for the photograph and the exhibition only -Dreweatts cannot guarantee the overall stability and if additional elements may be required on installation. There are losses, abrasions and restorations including: the polychrome painted decoration has some flaking; there are cracks and splits to the shaped crest with some parts in need of repair; the wood slats creating a groove at the bed head would presumably have been to hold a headboard that is not part of this lot. A single slat is missing All the fabrics are variously aged, discoloured, faded, marked and stained. The hangings which are included in this lot consist of 3 pairs of window curtains with matching pelmets. The bed curtains pictured are a pair of the window curtains. The rose printed fabric is glazed cotton and these hangings are lined. It is possible that the fabric across the top of the canopy is later than the hangings. Some elements are silk, including for example, the small blue silk flowerheads and these are fragile, showing signs of disintegration. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
