AN OAK FOLDING 'X' FRAME CHAIRIN TUDOR STYLE, 19TH CENTURYthe frame upholstered in red fabric edged with studs, the cushion with a silver thread tassel, with unmarked silver hexagonal finials and a flowerhead embossed plaque90.5cm high, 60cm wide, 42.5cm deep Catalogue NoteThis chair is a copy of 'Queen Mary's Chair' in the museum at Winchester Cathedral. The original, it is thought, was made for the marriage of Mary Tudor to Philip II of Spain in 1554 and formed part of the extensive and rich furnishings commissioned and installed in the Cathedral for the wedding. A pair of chairs would have been made and, since Mary was at the time, presenting herself as the Monarch with Philip as her consort, they were unconventionally seated with Mary on the right and Philip on the left. This chair was probably made in the second half of the 19th century, at which point travel for leisure was becoming easier, early photographs were available and the Victorian interest in taking inspiration from history was in full swing. This fashion continued into the 20th century, exemplified by a pair of 'X' frame Throne Chairs made for the Coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937, and re-used by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This pair includes a prominant Tudor Rose at the cross-over point of the legs.
