Confectionary.- Elizabeth David's copy.- Bell (Joseph) A Treatise on Confectionary, In All its Branches, first edition, engraved frontispiece and 4 plates, of which 1 folding, and 1 printed in blue, tissue guards, 2pp. list of subscribers at end, title with repair verso to lower corner of outer margin, folding plate with repair verso to split at a fold and short tear to upper margin, plate at p.203 with repair verso to short marginal tear, 2C2 with piece torn from blank lower corner, 2E2 small piece torn from blank lower corner, spotting and staining, lightly browned, ownership inscription to front pastedown scribbled out with biro, 20th century buckram, double red morocco labels to spine, spine slightly faded, some staining (mostly to lower cover), [Cagle 564; Simon BG 189], 8vo, Newcastle, Printed for the author, by G. Angus, In the Side, 1817. *** Rare at auction, with only three copies traced since 1932. Bell tell us on the title that he was Confectioner to The Prince of Wales and Duke of York. Includes the making of a 'hedgehog' of almonds, and 'a pack of cards in blancmange', and the spinning of gold and silver webs of sugar. The folding plate gives a bill of fare for 'A Grand Desert', featuring nearly 40 dishes.Provenance: Elizabeth David (bookplate to front pastedown).

(4) *** David was working on her history of ice and ices when she died in 1992. It was posthumously edited by Jill Norman and published in 1994 as Harvest of the Cold Months. The majority of the silver is stamped sterling, however one jar is fully hallmarked to London, mm Goldsmiths & Silversmiths.
