Bonhams's footnote on this lot states 'Subject of a letter from How, 31st March 1943: "You can have the Argyll for £65 if you like, and I am having it put to one side for you. It is certainly a piece which appeals to me very much, and if I were going to be the permanent owner I would document it historically by engraving on the bottom:- 'Presented by Mrs. Winston Churchill to the Red Cross in 1943.' This, I think, would add very considerably to its historical importance".'

The scene is taken from a print in the Rijksmuseum by Crispin Van de Passe (1564-1637). He was the father of Simon Van de Passe, who was best remembered for finely engraved silver counters in the first half of the 17th century.

From research done by York Castle Museum it would appear that he spent much of his time in London, but managed to be made Free of the York Company in order to trade in the City. He died in London of 11 January 1692/3.'
