A fine late 19th century French engraved gorge cased enamel panelled carriage clock with original travelling case and a winding key.Drocourt no.11334 the dial signed J.Heros 10 Rue de la Paix 10, Paris The highly engraved case with moulded handle over an oval bevelled glass inspection panel and repeat button over two rectangular side panels depicting courting lovers, the signed Arabic dial with blued-steel spade hands surrounded by a wooded scene depicting a woman and a child with gilded border and bleu celeste background. The two train movement with silvered lever platform escapement with bi-metallic compensated balance, striking the hours and half hours on a coiled blued-steel gong. Ticking, striking and repeating. Sold with the original red velvet lined travelling case and a brass double ended winding key. 18.5cms (7ins) high (3)Footnotes:Purchased in November 2015 and cleaned in January 2018. Pierre and Alfred Drocourt were among the finest makers of carriage clocks in the mid to late 19th century, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d'Ailermont, and in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They made superb carriage clocks that were often highly decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal in Paris 1867, the Silver in Paris 1878 and the Gold in Paris 1889. A good second half of the 19th century silver mounted ebonised mantel clock with Presentation Inscription for 1879Chas.Frodsham & Co., 84 Strand, London, no.1611The architectural case with pediment top fitted with the emblem of the Coldstream Guards and four ball finials, over ten silver side panels depicting battle related accoutrements, each marked T.P for Thomas Parker, the bottom of the case fitted with a commemorative plaque 'To the officers of the Coldstream Guards from Lt.Col The Honble (sic) Lewis Payn Dawnay on his leaving the regiment December 1879.' on raised feet, the 4.25 inch silvered Roman dial with blued-steel spade hands centred by an engraved mask depicting a rose for England, a thistle for Scotland and a three-leaf clover for Ireland, with foliate spandrels. The single chain fusee movement with 5 turned pillars screwed front and back, and Harrison's maintaining power to a train of wheels of six crossings, terminating in a large gilt platform with free sprung blued-steel helical hairspring with a diamond endstone to the large cut and compensated bi-metallic balance and lever escapement. Instrument Maker to his MajestyThe arched case with adjustable wheatear hygrometer set above a hinged glazed hood door over a long trunk terminating in a hemispherical cistern cover, the centre of the trunk inset with an imposing mercury thermometer behind a hinged glazed door, the flat bulb measuring 3 inches in length and registering against a scale marked from 25 to 95 degrees, the lower numerals bracketed as 'WINTER', the upper bracketed as 'SUMMER', the signed silvered dial above reading from 28-31 inches and with manual vernier scale, with three weather predictions. 108cms (42 1/2ins) high (1)Footnotes:George Adams was arguably the best known and respected maker of scientific instruments in the latter half of the 18th century. King George III appointed Adams to be his Mathematical Instrument Maker in 1760, and about 20% of the Royal Collection emanated from his Fleet Street workshop.
