A silver marriage box. Hexagonal reproduction model of a 17th century wedding box from Friesland. The 6 sides each have an image of allegorical figures representing faith, hope, love, tenderness, trust and prudence. Holding hands are engraved on the lid and the side is surrounded by flowers and angels. Boxes like this were meant to hold a marriage sovereign, which a man offered to the woman he wanted to marry. If she accepted his gift, it would be a legally binding acceptance of his marriage proposal.
