After Hyacinthe Rigaud (French, 1659-1743), "A Pair of State Portraits: King Philip V of Spain and his consort Queen Elizabeth Farnese of Parma", 18th c., oils on canvas, unsigned, with "D. B. Butler & Co., New York" (c. 1900-1935), labels en verso with client`s name "Jackson" and no. 62630, 48 in. x 38 1/2 in. and 47 in. x 38 in., framed, with Spanish-language plaques giving sitters` and artist`s names on each. Note: Rigaud, court painter to King Louis XIV of France, painted the monarch`s grandson, Philip V of Spain, in 1700; that famous painting is still at Versailles. Philip`s second marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of Odouardo Farnese of Parma, occurred in December 1714, so the engraved prints on which these dramatic portraits were evidently based (prints which issued in the multiples from the Rigaud studio) were probably of two different dates. There is also a possibility that the 19th-century maker of the plaques on the present frames may have been mistaken about the original artist(s) of the prints, and that both these images may perhaps reflect the work of Jean Ranc (1674-1735), Rigaud`s apprentice and protégé, who in fact painted both the King and Queen in 1722/1723 (both paintings now in the Prado, Madrid). This possibility gains particular force when one considers that the style and handling of these pictures is much closer to Ranc`s typically drier, almost enamel-embossed emphasis on drapery and jewelry.
A Rare and Monumental Shearwater Pottery Jardinière, c. 1940, thrown by Peter Anderson and decorated by James McConnell "Mac" Anderson with a white slip ground and black and green stylized scroll design, the rim with a geometric pattern of blossoms, roundels and banding in black and green, height 26 3/4 in., diameter 19 in., accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Note: This rare and likely unique Shearwater Pottery jardinière is remarkable not only for its monumental size and form, but for the fact that it has survived to this day. Made by special order only, this pot was hand pressed by Peter Anderson into a mold which was then fired in the ground. Due to the large size of the piece, this was a difficult process hence these jardinières were only made on commission. The main mold used for this vase was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina which devastated the Shearwater Pottery. This visually stunning piece decorated by James McConnell "Mac" Anderson incorporates scrolling vertical forms that bring to mind clouds, waterspouts or mermaids purses. The design certainly references his brother Walter Anderson`s linocuts of Clouds and Waterspouts.
