A PORTFOLIO OF WORK comprising watercolours, pen drawings and prints presented to Tom Pemberton on his Retirement by Friends and Pupils at Canterbury College of Art including work by David D. Ferry, Andrezej Klimowski, Agatha Sorel, Mali Morris, Stephen Farthing and David Atherton (Est. plus 21% premium inc. VAT)
Two prints, one a Chinese scene the other Venice. Each 14 cm x 18.5 cm, in Edwardian gilt frames. CONDITION REPORT: The picture frame housing the scene of Venice has numerous small age splits throughout the moulded plasterwork frame. The left tip and centre tip of the central scroll have been restored. A small section of the shell scroll to the lower left hand corner has been restored. Most likely this picture frame has been re-gilded early on in its life. The matching picture frame housing the scene of the China is slightly duller in colour throughout than its partner frame but has less stress fractures to the moulded plasterwork. There is a small hole to the bottom right hand corner capital C scroll. Other than those faults mentioned all appears to be intact.
WILLIAM JOHNSTONE [1897-1981]. I See the Image, 1981. lithograph, edition of 50 [22/50]; as with most of this series of prints the lithograph incorporates one of Edwin Muir's poems, which inspired the work. Signed in pencil. 33 x 52 cm [overall 38 x 57 cm including frame]. Provenance: private collection, UK - acquired directly from the artist. Johnstone was a Scottish artist and one of the UK's greatest abstract painters - he was painting in an abstract expressionist style in the 1930s, long before anyone else. [very good condition - as with all of this series of lithographs there is a vertical fold in the centre, but hardly visible when framed - this is not damage]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable.
