The South Sea Company famously known for the economically disastrous "South Sea Bubble" of over-speculation which made the Company go bust, had previously supplied much silver bullion to the Mint in exchange for the right to export money overseas. The silver supplied up to 1723 produced a large coinage of Crowns, Halfcrowns, Shillings and Sixpences.

Very attractively toned with underlying mint brilliance, a pleasing extremely fine and as good as you would expect to see for a Charles II Five Guineas, superb, in NGC holder graded MS62+. The elephant mark is the badge of the African Company that supplied gold bullion to make this coinage. The “Samuel King” Survey, “The Rarity of Five Guinea Pieces – An Analysis” co-authored by this cataloguer revealed a total of only six examples of the elephant below bust passing through the British market place in a 45 year period up until 2005, one of the lowest numbers generated for Charles II in this survey. Based on the survey findings the date of 1675 is the fourth rarest for Charles II. The coin offered here being the one from the Samuel King collection and others as defined below. Some tiny nicks and marks both sides, a couple of more major ones in obverse fields, retaining a proof-like mint brilliance, otherwise almost extremely fine, reverse extremely fine, rare, in NGC holder gradedMS62+. The elephant and castle is the badge of the African Company that supplied gold bullion to make this coinage. Attractively toned with red copper colouration, underlying brilliance, very light adjustment at centre of head, otherwise extremely fine and very rare this well preserved, MS62. L.D.S.R.I.AT.ET.E., edge grained, weight 16.79g (Schneider 570/- dies 4/1/A; MCE 291; S.3667B). Attractively toned, with underlying proof-like brilliance, streak of tone on reverse, a superb example of the George II Two Guineas, unusual reverse die with only seven string Irish harp not in Schneider Collection for a 1738 dated piece which is usually seen on 1735 two guinea pieces, a pleasing extremely fine and rare die variety with good provenance, rare. Provenance: Ex Capt. K. J. Douglas-Morris, Sotheby, 26th November 1974, lot 60. Though the Schneider Collection does not have an example with the seven string harp reverse, Herbert Schneider does record this die combination in his February 1957 Spink Numismatic Circular article with only one example being cited in the Dominic Mitchell Collection, though that is not the same example as this piece offered here. It is seemingly a very rare die combination with the reverse having been previously used on the 1735 dated issue.

E., edge chevron graining, weight 16.77g (Schneider 576; MCE 293; S.3669). Slight surface marks both sides, one short hairline scratch on cheek, reverse rim nick, otherwise a bold very fine.

Light tone with residual brilliance around margins, some light haymarking on obverse, some other hairlines, otherwise a bold to good very fine. (Schneider 617; MCE 416; S.3733). Small black spot in Irish harp, lightly toned with underlying brilliance, extremely fine, has been graded and slabbed by PCGS as AU58, very rare indeed. PCGS certification 485719.58/30375084. This coin is the finest graded by PCGS of a total of two pieces of this very rare issue, the lesser coin being rated a 53.
