Lot 262

Two 9ct Gold '375' hallmarked Prize Medals. One of the medals come with a Rolled Gold Albert Chain and three Sterling Silver silver fobs with rose coloured motifs on them.  Total of five pieces in the joblot.  One of the 9ct Gold Prize Medals states 'The Humphrey Medal White Hart Willesden' on one side and on the other side it says ' St. Albans Prize Band Best Horn 2nd Section Neasden 1922 E.Ewens' with lwreath decoration.  The other medal is engraved one side on the rose coloured emblem 'EGE' and on the other side 'Hanwell Contest E.Ewens 1923' with wreath decoration. This medal is on a rolled gold albert chain.  The two 9ct Gold medals weight altogether is approx 16 grams.  The three Sterling Silver fobs weigh altogether approx 16.48 grams. Two of the silver fobs have blank cartouches. The other has a rose gold coloured harp emblem. The rolled gold albert chain is approx 39 grams.

The self-taught Wil Jones used to perform in Eisteddfod and chapels, he worked as a farmhand and worked in a quarry, also a keen poet and lyricist. To accompany a typed local history manuscript in Welsh, 'Cymeriad', with information on Wil Jones and his performances, also to accompany a bound Welsh music score 'Moliant Israel sef Crynoad o Donau a Dyganau Cynulledfaol Gwreiddiol a Dotholedig' (praise of Israel - a collection of original and selected congregational tunes and songs), inscribed in the fly-sheet by members of Wil's family and by Peter Parry with address in Llanelian, 1872, also various photographs of Wil and copies of a harpist manual 'Allwedd y Tannau', an old purse of English gut harp-strings and tools etc.Additional provenance added on 03/11/23 after catalogue printing: photographs / notice of rememberance / poem etcComments: gilt section overpainted in gold paint.

Rare Irish 20 Pence Trial Piece Irish Coin: A rare 1985 Twenty Pence Trial Piece Coin, the obverse with profile of a horse and '20p', the reverse with central harp and 'Eire' dated '1985' with riveted and smooth edge, some streaks, mellowed tone, good example. * These Coins were issued in advance of production to various companies and organisations to facilitate calibration of vending machines and other coin operated devices such as telephones, meters etc. According to sources in the Central Bank, less than 50 pieces of the 500 or so issued were not returned. To date about ten examples in private hands have been recorded, making it one of the rarest Irish modern coins, even scarcer than the 1943 florin.  Provenance: Private Collection, Co. Tipperary.

A George III Irish Silver Coffee-Pot, Maker's Mark Overstruck, Dublin, Retailed by Carden Terry, Cork, Circa 1770 pear-shaped and on spreading foot, the body chased with foliage scrolls, flowers and fruiting grapevines, the lower body further chased on one side with a dolphin and the other with birds, each below a vacant cartouche, the hinged cover with spiral-fluted finial, with wood handle31cm high, gross weight 30oz 3dwt, 938grMarked underneath 'Ster' over 'Ling'. Further marked twice with maker's mark. One CT overstriking another and another somewhat indistinct possibly MT (?). Further marked near the rim with Hibernian and harp marks as well as maker's mark CT CT overstriking another. The cover bezel with Hibernian and harp marks as well as somewhat indistinct maker's mark possibly MT (?). There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable a minor softening to the high points. The cartouche on each side has been erased. On one side this has caused a split. The handle is probably been replaced.
