Lowry` on the reverse, pencil 12.7 x 17.1cm. Exhibited: With the Piccadilly Gallery, London, December 1964. Anonymous Sale: Christies, London, 28th February 2007, where purchased by the vendor`s brother. Paintings and drawings by Lowry of the South of England are rare. No other drawings of Hastings have been traced to date, there are however one or two references to Brighton. One such drawing can be found at Salford Museum and Art Gallery `Man playing a harp, Brighton 1963`, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1976. One of the factors which made Lowry`s mature drawing style so successful was the apparent endless variation of tone and line that he was able to extract from this most basic artistic medium. Preferring the softer leads, but also using harder leads for detail or scraping away with a finger nail or smudging with the edge of the thumb, the range of line within a Lowry drawing is exceptional.
