A Gothic Revival maple and giltwood pedal harp by Sebastian & Pierre Erard, Paris19th Century, gilt wood, patent no. 5131, decorated with panels of Saints, 175.5cm high Provenance: Dunkirk Manor Sebastian Erard designed the double action system for the harp which is now found with minor variations in all modern harps. Establishing a factory in Paris, Erard manufactured pianofortes for Marie-Antoinette and the Duchesse de Villeroi. Erard fled at the onset of the French Revolution, setting up a workshop in Great Marlborough Street, London and attaining similar popularity in the years he resided there. Leaving his London workshop in the capable hands of his nephew, Pierre, Sébastien eventually returned to Paris where he continued to reimagine and improve his instruments. The current harp is a comparatively late production, circa 1850, designed by his nephew Pierre. In 1839, England’s Queen Victoria appointed Pierre Erard “Pianoforte Maker to Her Majesty.” Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s beloved husband, also favoured Erard pianos and commissioned a horizontal grand piano in the Renaissance style. The pedals are connected to the disks - additional images

The poem (written to be sung to the air of Auld Lang Syne), was written on the occasion of Brown's visit to Bridgwater with another fugitive slave, William Craft. An eloquent speaker he subsequently began lecturing for the abolition movement in New York and was soon hired by the American Anti-Slavery Society. Hope Esq.-/size of Picture H 3-7 1/2 by 4-8in is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D17419).The present lot was commissioned by Thomas Hope (1769-1831), an interior and Regency designer, traveler, author, philosopher, art collector, and partner in the banking firm Hope & Co. He is best known as an early promoter of Greek Revival architecture, opening his house as a museum and his novel Anastasius, a work which many experts considered a rival to the writings of Lord Byron. The original painting was previously thought to be by Domenichino (as borne out by the inscription on Henry Bone's drawing). This attribution goes back as far as the eighteenth century, when it was in the collection of a Scottish nobleman, Sir Robert Udny. The painting, now in the collection of the National Gallery, London (NG5284) was later considered to be by an unknown Roman painter, but is now correctly attributed to Pietro da Cortona. Pietro da Cortona was one of the most influential and prolific figures of the Roman Baroque who decorated many of Rome's churches and palaces. The painting is one of a small number of works stylistically linked with his frescoes in the Palazzo Mattei in Rome, datable to shortly before 1624–5. Cortona's early works include a profusion of classical architecture and other references, such as the temple seen in the background here. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
