A Charles I copper Richmond farthing having a crown and sceptres on the obverse, a five string harp to the reverse, together with copper offcuts related to coin striking including some pieces showing partial miss-strikes and fragments of scissel, together with a box lid proclaiming them to be "Gold Plates and small Gold coin of King Charles 1st, found in an ancient Square Coalpit on the 2 Yards mine at Chaunters in Atherton. March 1816", a handwritten note stating the pieces to have "been weighed by the hydrostatic balance and appear to be gold with less of the alloy of the present currency of this kingdom March 22nd 1816", and an explanatory note relating to where it was found and speculating that "doubtless coining was carried out in the mine during the troubles of the age". [Chanters Colliery in Hindsford was sunk in 1854 by J Fletcher. Over previous Centuries coal had been mined there from small shallow pits, one of which was named the 'Gold Pit' after 17th-century coins and the plates from which they were stamped were found at the bottom of the shaft.]
