A FIRST WORLD WAR MILITARY CROSS GROUP OF SIX TO THE ROYAL FUSILIERS. A Great War group of six comprising George V Military Cross, unnamed as issued, 1914-15 Star named to 10780 Sjt F. Howard R. Fus. War Medal and Victory Medal to 2 Lieut F. Howard, Second World War Defence and War Medals unnamed as issued. Frank Howard was born in 1888 enlisting as a Band Boy in the Royal Fusiliers. He entered the War in France on the 19th January 1915 and was Commissioned a Second Lieutenant on the 9th April 1917, he served with the 4th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Wounded on the 20th Jan 1917 during an attack from the south of the Arras-Cambrai road, advancing at 0700 hours the battalion came under heavy shell fire but continued to move forward until they had covered about a mile progressing over a defensive system at Tilloy known as 'The Harp'. The Battalion lost 225 Officers and Men on that day. Howard was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty 'He led his company in the attack until severely wounded. He refused to be moved back and although only able to crawl he remained in command. When forced to withdraw he organised and made determined efforts to resume the offensive, shortly afterwards becoming unconscious.' His brother was killed in the same action. He suffered with the wound for years to come due to shrapnel embedded in his body and left the Army in 1919. He reenlisted in the Royal Fusiliers 10th (City of London) Battalion (69th Searchlight Regiment)(Territorial) as an Administrative Officer. Mounted for display with copied history. *CR Good condition.
A Scottish sycamore snuff box, wooden hinge, rectangular with curved sides, the lid with statue of William III monument within floral wreath with crowned harp at base and inscribed 'The Glorious and Immortal Memory', within an octagonal frame within leaves and berries, the sides and base in the same design, foil 30%, 8.1 x 5.1 x 1.8cms.

GRATIA, toothed border around rim both sides, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, later harp, Lion of Nassau as an escutcheon at centre, date either side of crown, .MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. ET. REGINA., 8.26g (Schneider 465; Farey 312; EGC. 360; MCE 152; S.3426). Toned, a well-balanced coin much eye appeal, about or near very fine.The Latin legends translate to on obverse "William and Mary by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

Weakly struck at 12 o'clock and corresponding reverse, good portrait, very fine graded by NGC as AU Details Cleaned.NGC Certification 8221134-003The gold output for the calendar year of 1695 was the second highest of the reign at £717,218 compared to the smallest silver output in the same year of a mere £62.

A George II Irish Silver Salver, Maker's Mark HC, Dublin, Circa 1740 shaped circular and on four shell and scroll cast feet, with foliage and rocaille-cast border, similarly chased and centring a later engraved coat-of-arms46cm diameter, 83oz 13dwt, 2,601grMarked underneath with maker's mark, Hibernia and harp marks. The marks are generally clear. Engraved with a scratch weight "86"5'. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The coat-of-arms appears to be later but within the original cartouche. Presumably erased though does not feel obviously thin.

Shackleton, the leaf additionally signed later by Ranulph Fiennes, Ellen Terry, Henry Irving, Wilhelm Ganz (with line of music), Thomas Lloyd, Maria and Guglielmo Marconi, Sebastian Ferranti, Granville Bantock (with line of music), Gladys Cooper, Clara Butt, Alice of Albany, Harry Lauder, Prince Edward, Princess Mary, Prince Henry and Prince George, Queen Elizabeth II when Princess, Lucy and Stanley Baldwin, Caradog Roberts (with line of music) and Nellie Melba. Provenance: by family repute this album was compiled by Maude Thomas and her descendants. Note: Maude Thomas was Queen Elizabeth’s Mistress of the Robes when the then princess was attending events in Wales. Maude was also an accomplished musician playing Piano, the Viola and the Harp, achieving the accolade of ‘Harpist of the Rhondda’.
A George IV silver harp prize for the Brecon Eisteddfod 1826, with presentation inscription 'I John Jones, Telynor, am ei Ragoriad ar y Delan, Yn Eisteddfod Aberhonddu, Medi 26, 1826' and further Welsh inscription of verse 'in Praise of the Harp', by Chas Taylor, Maker, 37 High St, Bristol, 17cm high, 3.5ozMiniature harps such as this were given as prizes at 19th century Eisteddfodau, and may be modelled on one given at a 16th century Eisteddfod at Caerwys. The Welsh inscription translates as 'To John Jones, Harper, for his Excellence on the Harp, in the Eisteddfod of Brecon, September 26, 1826'. John Wood Jones (1804-1844) was from a family of musicians, and was trained on the triple harp by the famous blind harper Richard Roberts of Caernarfon In good condition overall, minor knocks and scratches. The maker's details are engraved to the underside of the base, but no conventional hallmarks.
