He has traced his family back to Jeremiah Steevens (1625-88), a Maulster in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. A Maulster was the term for someone who malted grain for brewing and other purposes. The family remained predominantly in this area, continuing to follow the Quaker beliefs. They worked in the milling, malting and flour dealing trades, by the 1820’s they had moved into the grocery business, followed by the building trade in the 1850’s. Joseph Steevens (1728-1801) had nine children and, when each had reached the age of 9, they were sent to the Ackworth Quaker School in Yorkshire between the years 1792-1811, for approximately 3 years. Due to the reputation of the School, many children were sent from Quaker families in the South of England to attend it. Unfortunately our samplers do not bear any names or initials, but are executed with an exceptional skill certainly seen in other Quaker examples.
