A Late 19th Century Brussels Bobbin Applique Lace Fan, backed with cream gauze and mounted on white mother-of-pearl sticks. The design is fairly unusual being a sweeping spray of flowers from one side of the leaf to the other. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm. Contained in an unlabelled card fan box covered with cream silk satin. A Large Late 19th Century Black Machine Lace Fan, the leaf mounted on plain tortoiseshell sticks. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm (3) Second fan: Purchased at Sotheby's on May 1st 1980, one of two fans, for £22.00 Provenance: the fan was purchased privately in 1984, for £100. Miss Kennedy was told that the fan had belonged to the then vendor's grandmother, a Miss Herbert of the family who owned Muckross Abbey in Ireland, a famous beauty spot near Killarney, and now a National Museum.Fan 1 - lace slightly soiled. Fan 2 - in good order.
A 19th Century Fan, the wooden monture painted brightly in gold, the double leaf of a vibrant blue silk satin, a fragment of 18th century bobbin lace applied to the top as a border, telescopic action, the verso plain. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm when closed. Together with A Late 19th/Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with a double leaf, strong blue silk satin to the recto overlaid with white bobbin lace, the harebell shaped flowers in tape lace, the borders and reserves in ''cucumber'' lace. With a darker blue silk to the verso, the size 9.75 inches or 25cm; and Four Items Of Antique Lace, to include a Normandy lace circular table centre, a bobbin runner, a Maltese handkerchief and a machine lace shawl collar edged with tapelaceThe first fan is bright and clean, the verso with light foxing. The bone fan is a little grubby and the upper guard has been repaired. The Normandy lace centre is intact but very stained. The Maltese handkerchief is damaged.
A Late 19th Century Belgian Bobbin Lace Fan Leaf, mounted on white mother-of-pearl, the workmanship of particular note and quality, with delicate fillings, unusual flower shapes and the lace executed in whole and half stitch to give definition and detail. Possibly an element of Ghent design. Together with a cream card fan box. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cmClean, the lace crisp and firm.
An Early 20th Century Fan, the monture of pink mother-of-pearl, the bone ribs overlaid with a light and airy bobbin lace leaf in mainly tape lace with fillings and joined with brides. The loop is embellished with an ornate cream silk tassel incorporating metal thread. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm. Together with a card fan box covered in floral paper, lined with cream silk (2)Some light brown staining to the lace. One MOP rib is broken and the section is missing. Box a little scuffed.
A Good Black Bobbin Lace Fan, both the monture and the ribs of tortoiseshell, the leaf designed with a large spray of flowers beneath scrolling. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together with A Late 19th or Early 20th Century Cream Gauze Fan, the leaf mounted on cream painted wooden sticks, shaped and carved and pierced. The gauze leaf is painted with dainty daises and cornflowers and applied with seven horizontal bands of a deeper cream ribbon. When folded these ribbons protrude from the side of the fan, an unusual feature. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm (2) First fan: Purchased at the Chelsea Antique Market in London in 1978. Second fan: Purchased on 17th May 1979 for £40.00Good tortoiseshell.
An Early 20th Century Brussels Mixed Lace Fan, the leaf mounted on white mother of pearl, the upper guard with a gold metal monogram, and a seven ball crown. The leaf is mainly formed from bobbin lace, with a needlelace motif in the centre. Contained in a cream card fan box covered in silk. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Together with A Small Early 20th Century Silk Fan, mounted on cream sticks of a man made material, the silk leaf depicting Rinaldo in the Gardens of Armida. Guard length 7.75 inches or 19.5cm (2) This leaf is known to have been available in the uncut form as a gift from one of the Ladies Magazines and in at least two sizes. The uncut form has the name of the scene and the magazine name printed beneath the image. These fan leaves could be taken to a fan maker for mounting, as presumably this one wasBrussels fan, several of the gorge sticks broken. Second fan in good order.
Royal Connection: Circa 1880's, A Brussels Bobbin Lace Fan, with painted birds, attributed to HRH Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, the 9th and youngest of her daughters and her favourite child. The central panel, of cream silk, painted with a variety of detailed and colourful birds, is bordered with Brussels bobbin appliqué, the leaf being mounted on white mother-of-pearl, carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the elaborate gorge backed with thin mother-of-pearl, most likely burgau. Contained in a card fan box covered in lilac fabric and accompanied by a visiting card inscribed ''With Best Wishes from Beatrice'' and printed ''Princess Beatrice, Kensington Palace''. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Purchased at Christie's on August 2nd 1983 for £160. Exhibited at the Royal fans exhibition at Harewood House in 1986, catalogue No 99 HRH Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) was known to be a keen artist and photographerGenerally sound. A one inch split noted in the centre of the central fold but the leaf is holding well.
A Circa 1880's Bone Fan with Telescopic Action, the leaf of salmon pink satin applied with four motifs of cream Honiton bobbin lace with good leadwork fillings. The loop is finished with a salmon pink silk tassel with some metal thread embellishment. Extended length 9.75 inches or 25cm. Together with A Small Brussels Point De Gaze Fan, the lace mounted on carved, pierced, silvered and gilded white Mother-of-pearl sticks, the gorge with attractive detail. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm (2)The first fan, the telescopic action works freely. There is an odd stain to the satin, one or two brown mark on the lace, and the cream backing has glue marks on most folds. The needlelace fan leaf has deep brown rust marks, and a repair to the upper section of the upper guard.

The leaf, worked with mainly bobbin lace, features a central cartouche of Brussels needlelace in a floral/rose design with raised petals. Contained in a card Duvelleroy fan box covered in red silk. Guard length 12.25 inches or 31cm Purchased at Christie's on March 23rd 1978.
An Early 20th Century Small Belgian Bobbin Lace Fan, probably Bruges, the leaf mounted on white mother of pearl, contained in a cream card fan box lined in cream silk. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with A Slightly Larger But Similar Bruges Bobbin Lace Fan, mounted on white mother-of-pearl, contained in a card fan box with olive green exterior (4)The first fan has a broken gorge stick, a clean break with both parts present. Two ribs noted as broken.
An Unusual Circa 1880's White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture overlaid à la Sultane, lightly engraved, the alternating cream silk panels mainly appliqued with Brussels bobbin lace, one end panel with tatting, the upper border of needle lace. The verso is plain cream silk, and the shaped loop holds a cream silk tassel, decorated with curled gold metal wire, the very top a knot and toggle in gold metal thread. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with a card fan box covered in cream silk, the padded silk interior marked in gold for the retailer, J.D. Vickery, Regent Street WAt least 2 repairs to the lower guard. One crack or well done repair to the upper guard, hard to see. The backing silk is soiled and one small mark is visible on the recto.
