Late 17th Century Flemish Bobbin Lace Flounce, with floral design overall comprising two pieces stitched together, 30cm by 440cm Provenance: Collection of Agnes Briscoe (Née Ralph) enjoyed a lifelong passion for lace and making lace. She was born in 1841 in Settle, North Yorkshire, her parents were both independently wealthy, having set up and owning their own businesses. Agnes married John Jonathan Briscoe in 1863 in Austwick and lived at Bridge House, Starbotton, having four children. Agnes collected lace throughout her life, understanding the intricacies of making it, which she continued to do till the end of her life in December 1918. Her granddaughter Viscountess Selby remembered how Agnes, despite being wheel chair bound at the end of her life, spent her time putting a lace border on every pillowcase and tablecloth in the home. In 1955 Mrs Briscoe-George (Agnes' youngest child) bought Norris Castle on the Isle of Wight where the lace was later housed. In the 1970's it became open to the public and the lace collection was on display in the circular drawing room in the tower. In 2016 Norris Castle was passed out of the family.
