An early 18th Century joined oak gateleg table, having a two plank top, the leaves each formed of three planks, the central bed fitted with a single drawer, raised on bobbin turned legs, united by square moulded stretchers, 72cm high, 106cm wide, 46cm deep, 132cm long (fully extended)Good patina throughout, drawer retaining original lock and divided interior, no active woodworm detected, structurally sound overall, some repairs but expected
An Attractive Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, the monture intricately carved and pierced and painted, the gorge noticeably decorated with figures and a trompe l'oeil of white bobbin lace on a blue background. The vellum leaf is painted in pastels with a gentle scene of 18th century courtship, several couples strolling through apart, one lady listening to a piper, seated next to an elaborate stone carving of cherubs above a fountain. The verso is simply painted with a seated lady watching a cherub in flight. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good for age, a small brown mark above the piper's head, several such marks on the verso which do not come through to the recto. Some loss to the backing MOP on the gorge. Unusual to find trompe l'oeil on the gorge, more often found painted on the leaf.
Three Large Fans, circa 1890's/1900, comprising a cream gauze fan painted with lilac many-petalled flowers and yellow blossom, the leaf edged with cream bobbin lace. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm; a second fan in similar style, painted with 6 birds perched on a blossoming branch, the larger bird clearly leading the morning chorus. The leaf is edged with narrow cream machine lace. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm. The final fan, of wood painted black, is of black silk satin embroidered in floss silks with flowers and buds in autumnal colours, the stems being worked in gold metal thread (3) CONDITION REPORT: . First fan is in good order other than slight brown marking at the top left. The gauze is strong. Several ribs on the second fan need to be re-secured but are present, although the lower guard has broken at the rivet and a small piece of bone is absent. Glue has left brown marks in places. Nothing to note on fan three.
Two Large Late 19th Century Fans, the first signed to the right by Ronot Tutin, a French painter who specialised in floral fan leaves. The cream gauze leaf is painted with Lily of the Valley. The monture, of dark wood, is carved and shaped in a serpentine fashion, the upper guards continuing the naturalistic theme being carved with acorns, their shells gilded to complement the gilding on the gorge. The elegant gold silk tassel is knotted and embroidered with gold threads. Together with a large black gauze fan, the leaf mounted on carved and pierced sticks, painted centrally with a bird in flight approaching flowering white blossom. The remaining leaf is applied with black machine lace, the top border possibly a bobbin border, certainly a different design. Guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . The Tutin has slight splitting to the gauze on the outmost fold, both sides. The second fan has a small tear to the lace, top right- hand corner.
Two Very Feminine Fans of differing forms, the first, circa 1900, a bone fan of the type considered to have been produced in the Philippines, with carved and pierced monture, the gorge sticks continuing to sit over the recto of the cream silk leaf, à la sultane, ending in carved shaped tips reminiscent of Persian turrets. The silk is delicately painted with very tiny, pretty flowers, and the top edged with handmade bobbin lace. The shaped and embossed gold loop is finished with a small tiered silk tassel. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm. Together with a wooden cockade fan with ivory handle, the turned shaft ending in a loop, the upper wood section painted in cream and adorned with a gilt-edged mirror. From the verso, a sliding lever concealed within a slot operates the opening of the cockade fan. The leaf, black paper, is painted with groups of pink roses and white daisies, scalloped at the top edge, edged with eau de nil marabou, and embroidered with gold sequins. The verso is plain black. Overall height when extended 15.5inches or 39.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . the first fan has a repair to the upper guard. The cockade marabou is thinning.
Four Fans Ranging from 1900 to the 1920's, to include a Mixed Brussels lace fan, the leaf mounted on pink mother of pearl sticks, the main leaf of bobbin lace with a Point de Gaze central feature with raised petals. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with three ostrich feather fans, to include an example with a band of white feathers topped with black feathers, the monture of faux tortoiseshell, overall height 15 inches or 38cm; a feather fan with slender ivory sticks, lightly carved and gilded, the feathers an unusual taupe in colour. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm, and finally a larger and showier pink mother of pearl fan with curled white feathers, and a hair ornament feather attached to the upper guard. Guard length 18 inches or 46cm (4) CONDITION REPORT: . all in good order, the lace on the small fan a little discoloured
A Third Quarter 19th Century Lace Fan, the monture of bone, carved, and pierced, fitted from behind with slivers of mother of pearl behind a carved lattice latticed. The leaf, of Brussels Bobbin Appliqué, backed with turquoise silk, giving a light an airy appearance. The design features a regular border within which a central floral spray is complemented by smaller sprays to each reserve. Verso outer layer of cream silk. A shaped and embossed gold metal loop is finished with a pale turquoise silk tassel worked with gold metal thread. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm, the lace border protruding another 0.5 inch CONDITION REPORT: . Good. The bone would benefit from cleaning, Some very very slight brown marks seen on the cream backing layer and one very pale to the left on the recto.
An Unusual Circa 1880's Lace Fan, the leaf a tape lace with varied needle lace fillings, possibly Luxeuil/Branscombe, (certainly similar), laid over cerise/salmon silk satin, backed with cream silk. Worked centrally in the lace, the initials M.P. The monture, attractively mottled mother-of-pearl shaded green/ pink, is probably burgau. Gold metal loop with knotted silk tassel, worked with metal threads. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm; Together with a mixed Brussels lace fan, early 20th century, the leaf of mainly bobbin lace mounted on white mother-of-pearl. Central to the leaf, a single needle lace flower with one raised petal layer is applied to net. Contained in an unlabelled box, a note inside proclaiming it to be a belated birthday gift from Ada to Anne Muriel (?). Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Three gorge sticks could have been repaired down near the rivet, hard to tell. The silk and silk tassel are faded, so quite pale to the left side, brighter cerise to the right. The lace appears to be the original colour but is slightly grubby. Second fan in good order.
A Late 19th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, mounted with a lace leaf of Brussels Bobbin Appliqué, featuring many different flower variations and leaves. Contained in a good card fan box covered in ruby silk satin, paper label inside the lid for Duvelleroy London. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm. Together with a small 1920's white gauze fan mounted on bone, and a large bone fan c.1890's, the monture lightly carved and pierced, the leaf a pale pink silk satin with a top and side border of cream machine lace. Topped with white marabou. The verso, in paler pink matt silk, is plain. Guard length 13.5 inches or 35cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Both guards on the lace fan have crude repairs, glue showing. The leaf has a fair amount of light brown discoloration. The box is in excellent order and too long for this fan, too short for the feather-edged fan. Second fan has one stick temporarily secured in the wrong spot. Fan 3 is missing the tip of the lower guard, has some light staining to the verso, and the marabou is thinning.
Two Large, Late 19th Century Lace Fans, the first with a plain bone monture supporting a cream satin leaf, surmounted with a Brussels bobbin appliqué leaf, with a large floral spray to the left and four butterflies and moths approaching from the right to seek the pollen. Backed in a plain beige silk satin. Contained in a long pink silk fan sheath, couched metal-thread embroidery and flowers and leaves worked with thin ribbon, this decoration enclosing a printed paper portrait of a wealthy lady in ringlets, wearing pearls. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm. Together with a black lace fan in a rather magnificent fitted fan box, the exterior covered in heavy maroon velvet, the inside base shaped and covered in turquoise velvet, and the inner lid padded and covered in bright turquoise silk, the name "Canassale (?) Hermanos, Montevideo - Paris written in silver. Fitted with metal catches. The fan, in wood stained black, has shaped upper guards carved with flowers and light carving to the gorge. The leaf is mounted à la demi-sultane, with 4 sticks over the leaf, these carved to complement the guards. The leaf, in bands, is formed from black gauze and a wide panel of floral black machine lace. Guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . generally good. The first fan, the sheath is splitting. The box for fan 2 fits the fan, but is father superior in quality. The lid, however, needs attention. The black gauze is split in several places.
Four Lace Fans and a Fan Monture, late 19th to early 20th century: Comprising a large late 19th century bone fan, the monture lightly carved and pierced, the Brussels bobbin lace leaf with an overall design of flowers and leaves. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm; a similar lace leaf mounted on bone, 1920's, the gorge sticks serpentine. Contained in a card fan box, the exterior in beige and printed in pink blue and gold in a floral/lattice design. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm; an early 20th century Belgian tapelace fan in a floral design, mounted on bone. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm; a dainty pink mother of pearl fan of fontange form, the lace leaf of Brussels bobbin appliqué designed with flowers and leaves. Overall height 7.5 inches or 19cm; and an attractively shaped bone monture consisting of two carved and pierced guards and seventeen sticks with continuous ribs. Guard length 10.5/8 inches or 27cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: . First fan, a break to a gorge stick where the rib joins the shoulder; fan 2, nothing noted; fan 3 has several repairs to gorge sticks down at the head; fan 4 has a very dirty leaf that appears sound, but eight of the sixteen bone ribs are broken. The monture has a repair to one guard and signs of having has a paper leaf.
