Cooper, Whitchurch, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds, date aperture and ringed winding holes, mask and scroll spandrels divided by engraved foliage, the five ringed pillar movement with inside locking plate striking and anchor escapement, in a case with glass lenticle to the trunk door, the flat hood with blind fret and flanked by barley twist columns, crossbanded sides, 83½in (212cm) high, circa 1710.

John Roger Arnold. A unique and well documented longcase domestic regulator, the 12 inch circular silvered dial signed J. R. Arnold, AD. MDCCCXXXIV, subsidiary seconds, most unusual arrow flight hands, substantial five pillar movement in shouldered plates, dead beat escapement with jewelled pallets and Harrison maintaining power, set-on-beat adjustment at top of crutch, mercury jar pendulum suspended from the back lock, in a mahogany case, the panelled plinth with double stepped base trunk door flanked by brass inlaid canted fluted corners, the break arch hood similarly flanked, ball and spire finials, 1834, 86in (218cm) high including finial. Literature: Robinson, Tom: The Longcae Close. Illustration of movement, dial and case on p. 407. Pages 406 and 409 discuss the clock: `Arnold was in partnership with Dent 1830-1840 so with this signature the clock must have been for personal or family use. Vandrey Mercer suggests that it could have been made to celebrate Arnold`s silver wedding`.

Gould, Londini Fecit, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds and date aperture, ringed winding holes and engraved rosette to centre, mask and scroll spandrels divided by engraved foliage, the six ringed pillar movement with locking plate striking and anchor escapement, in a case of warm colour, the flat hood with caddy top and frets, finial blocks to the sides (finials lacking), the sides and plinth with herringbone inlays and crossbanded panels, 88in (223cm) high. Christopher Gould. Free of the Clockmakers Company 1682. Died 1718. A maker of great repute, especially of longcase clocks.

A mid 18c eight day longcase clock , the 12" arched brass dial signed Sam Buxton, Diss and having scroll spandrels, a matted dial centre and unmatched steel hands. There is a moon phase dial in the arch and seconds and date indicators. The five pillar movement is rack striking on a bell. It is housed in a mahogany case, the hood having a flat cresting with three finials and a row of Greek key moulding below. There are plain columns flanking the dial and fluted quarter columns to the trunk which has a long trunk door with arched top. The base has a later high plinth added with a wavy plinth beneath, 91" tall overall

Lot 695

A nest of three mahogany occasional tables, the largest 48 cm wide Condition report Report by JB General marks and wear that you would expect from age and use. Light scratches and denting/pitting to the surfaces. Knocks and nicks to the edges where they slide in and out. Slight rubbing to pillar supports on majority of tables, along with a bit of water staining, most noticeably to the central section. Rubbing and knocking to the feet. All three tables have a slight wobble, however are intact and don't appear to have been broken. Smaller tables have a darker interior colour compared to the main table. Please see illustrations

A Bow porcelain shell centrepiece: modelled with two tiers of three scallop shells surmounted by a single shell the whole supported on three dolphins and a pillar of smaller shells, brightly enamelled and decorated with floral sprays within gilt dentil rims, 27 cm high, red dagger and anchor mark, circa 1760-70, discoloured restoration to one shell and slight chip restoration.

Grove, London, the eight-inch round convex painted dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel tulip hands and signed George Grove, Wood St, Cheapside, London, the dome topped mahogany case with inlaid stringing to the front, brass fishscale frets to the sides and standing on brass ball feet, height: 42 cm. * Biography George Grove is recorded as working in Wood Street from circa 1809 until his death in 1814. He was the son of the maker Richard Grove of the same address, a Freeman of the Clockmaker`s Company from 1760 until 1817.

Benjamin Jonas, Plymouth, a William IV mahogany bracket clock:, the eight-day duration, double fusee, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, with border engraving to the backplate and pendulum bob, the painted eight-inch round convex dial with black Roman numerals, decorative blued steel hands and signed B. Jonas, Plymouth, the mahogany case with gadrooned pediment top surmounted by a wood and brass ball finial, with further ribbed moulding to the top, bottom and corners of the case, with cast brass floral and ring handles to the sides and brass fishscale frets, standing on gadrooned ball feet, height: 48cm. * Biography Benjamin Jonas is recorded as working in James Street, Plymouth Dock from circa 1812 and married Ann Ezekiel, sister of the Exeter engraver E.A. Ezekiel of whom he was named as a trustee of his will in September 1806. Interestingly a Philip Ezekiel is known to be working in Plymouth Dock in the same period.

Smith, London, a bell-top bracket clock: having an eight-day duration, five pillar, double fusee movement with a verge escapement, fully engraved backplate with c-scroll decoration and striking the hours on a bell, the arched brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute markings, a matted centre with a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with an inset silvered nameplate engraved Thos. Smith, London, with cast brass c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and blued steel hands, the arch with a subsidiary dial for strike/silent and further c-scroll spandrels, the fruitwood bell-top case with traces of ebonising, wood fretwork to the top corners, glazed side panels, surmounted by a brass carrying handle and standing on brass bracket feet, height: 51cm (handle up) Complete with wall bracket. * Biography There are a number of maker`s named Thomas Smith working in London during this period with the maker of this clock possibly the Thomas working in Princes Street, Aldgate having been apprenticed in 1763, or the Thomas known working in Kirby Street circa 1774.

Kent, Saffron Walden, a lacquer longcase clock:, the eight-day duration, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic five minute markings fleur-de-lys half-hour decoration and with an arcaded minute ring, the silvered dial centre with a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and engraved with a seascape scene, the arch having a silvered boss engraved with the name Kent, Saffron Walden, the black lacquer case with raised chinoiserie decoration, three-quarter columns to the hood, a shallow caddy top, a break-arch trunk door and giltwood finials, height: 223cm. * Biography The Kent family of Clockmakers were working in Saffron Walden, Essex starting with Henry who was apprenticed in 1699 with this clock probably made by John Kent Snr who was married in 1764 and had a clockmaking son, also John, who was born in 1765. A William Kent had moved to Saffron Walden from Lynton in Cambridgeshire by 1753 and died there in 1783, a maker who numbered his clocks.

A Regency brass inlaid ebonised bracket clock, Wyatt, London, early 19th century, the five pillar twin fusee movement with anchor escapement, shouldered plates and striking the hour on a bell mounted on the backplate, the 5.75 inch square single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed WYATT, South Audley Street, London to centre, with fine heart pierced blued steel hands and foliate scroll engraved decoration to spandrels, the case with brass basket of flowers cast finial to the shallow gadroon carved cushion caddy resting on shallow stepped upstand above front with silvered brass angled fillet to glazed front door flanked by brass strip inset canted angles over apron now inlaid with foliate scroll motif, the sides with cast lions mask ring handles above rectangular brass sound frets, on moulded skirt base with compressed bun feet, 38cm (15ins) high. Henry Wyatt is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in London in 1839, other records indicate that he was 55 years old in 1841 and shared the premises in South Audley Street with his family including his successor, John aged 19 years.

Price, Maidstone, circa 1845, the four pillar single fusee movement with anchor escapement and slightly tapered plates, the 10 inch circular white painted Roman numeral convex dial signed T.R. PRICE, MAIDSTONE to centre and with blued steel hands within cast brass convex glazed bezel and moulded turned wooden surround, the box case with side doors above drop-trunk fronted with curved brass fillet edged glazed lenticle panel line border interrupted with rosettes to angles flanked by scroll carved ears, the curved base with pendulum access flap, 45cm (17.25ins) high. Thomas R. Price is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in Maidstone 1845-74.

*John Craxton RA (1922-2009), CAT AND BUTTERFLY Signed and dated 88 l.l., oil on board 41 x 18.5cm Exhibited: Christopher Hull Gallery, London, 1988, no. 24. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot. Ian Collins, Craxton's biographer writes about the artist's cats: 'Cats purred and prowled through the art and life of John Craxton (though his writer friend Patrick Leigh Fermor called them “interior desecrators and downholsterers”). An English line of feline pets was descended from Jeep - a stray that the Surrealist photographer Lee Miller had befriended in the Blitz. And Craxton's house in Crete from 1960 was filled with cats who pounced in his brightening Greek paintings and also punned their way through ever-witty Christmas cards (Ten Puss Fugit, Cat-a-pillar, Cat-astrophe)'. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious major faults.
