AN OAK AND MAHOGANY CROSSBANDED LONGCASE CLOCKWith rectangular brass dial inscribed Vale, Coventry with subsidiary seconds dial and date apenture, now in a case with shaped rectangular crossbanded trunk door between canted fluted angles, the panelled base on moulded plinth with ogee bracket feet236cm highProvenance:Supplied by Oliver MesselCondition Report: Movement is very dirty/neglected hence requires a clean and overhaul. The mechanism appears unaltered and original to the dial. Two of the dial feet use pillar castings which is a little unusual most likely not indicative of alteration. The dial is in very dirty/neglected condition; the hands are probably replacements otherwise appears to be in sound original condition. The movement and dial rest on unaltered cheek uprights suggesting that the they are original to the case. The right-hand cheek has a chunk missing from the rear edge and the backboard has some cracking/opening to the joints between its constituent sections. The plinth front panel has a horizontal shrinkage crack otherwise case is in sound original unrestored condition with faults limited to bumps, scuffs, shrinkage and other age-related blemishes.Clock has two weights, winder, case key but no pendulum. A PINK SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, MATHURA, KUSHAN PERIODIndia, Uttar Pradesh, 2nd-3rd century. The head finely carved with a round face, a gentle smile below heavy-lidded eyes, the brows centered by a circular urna, the face flanked by elongated ears and surmounted by closely cropped hair, remains of a back pillar. Provenance: The Pan-Asian Collection of Christian Humann, Denver, Colorado, USA. Formerly on loan to the Denver Art Museum. Sotheby's New York, 27 March 1991, lot 13, at an estimate of USD 4,000 or approx. EUR 8,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Stefaan Grusenmeyer, Belgium, acquired from the above. A noted Belgian private collection, acquired from the above in 1991 and thence by descent in the same family. A copy of the Sotheby's catalog entry from 27 March 1991 for the present lot, dating the head to circa 2nd century AD and attributing it to Mathura, accompanies this lot. Christian Humann (1929-1981) was born in France and later moved to the United States, eventually becoming the Curator of Asian Art at the Denver Art Museum. Humann was an enthusiastic collector of Asian statues, and his Pan-Asian Collection included a vast number of sculptures spanning from Afghanistan to Southeast Asia over the last two millennia. Condition: Good condition commensurate with age and overall as expected from a stone sculpture with an age of roughly two millennia. Extensive wear with signs of weathering and erosion, some nicks, structural cracks, and losses. CHARLES GRETTON LONDON: A GEORGE I MONTH-GOING LONGCASE CLOCK the 30.5cm brass arched dial with edge engraving, corner spandrels of two cherubs holding a single crown, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, the engraved cartouche within the arch inscribed " Cha Gretton LONDON", the month-going five pillar movement, striking on a bell. In a walnut veneered case with a sliding caddy hood, the long rectangular door with glass lenticle, 244cm high. Inside the case is a label of the retailer " G. Horstmann & Sons", who were active in Union Street Bath, from approximately 1904 until 1925. Note: This clock features in the Charles Gretton catalogue raisonne. In Charles Gretton Clock & Watchmaking Through the Golden Age' by D. Raddage, W. Meinen and L. Radage, this clock features as reference LC75, on page 233. It is recorded that this is one of the last known Gretton longcase clocks.
John Halifax, Fleet St, London; 18th-century mahogany cased 8-day longcase clock, the five pillar movement with a brass broken arch dial with strike silent indicator, silvered chapter ring and secondary dial at 12. O'clock and a date aperture at 6. O'clock, and chiming the hours on a single bell. 50 cm wide x 22 cm deep x 220 cm overall height.John Halifax is recorded as working in Fleet St, London in 1758 on page 337 of Brian Loomes's Watch & Clockmakers of the World.Movement has been recently restored, now with nylon cords and some replacement parts. Later/associated seat board. Case in good restored condition.
Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand, London; A mid 19th century rosewood and brass cased Two-day ship's chronometer, No. 2736 to dial and case, the silvered dial with two subsidiary dials, the bevel inscribed 'Exposition Universelle de 1855 Grande Medaille D'Honneur', the signed four pillar movement with fusee chain and split balance wheel, with outer travel case, dial 9cm diameter, rosewood case 16 cm wide, 17 cm high, 15.5 cm deep, outer case, 29 cm wide, 23 cm high, 25 cm deepRunning at the time of inspection. Very slight chips to the edge of the glass, significant wear to brass finish commensurate with age and use. Crack to the numbering medallion on the case. Small repair patches near the brass mounts on the top of the case. Two screws missing from the top section hinges.

Ascanius turns back to glimpse the burning city of Troy while Anchises holds steadfastly to the vessel with his ancestors' ashes. A draped lion skin represents the family's ties to Aphrodite. Stamped "F. Barbedienne Fondeur" along the base of the pillar. Further stamped "Reduction Mecanique A.
